Police Blotter May 16: Two Men Robbed Over Weekend; Arrest Made in High School Phone Robberies

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Robbery

An Evanston teenager was arrested Thursday and charged in connection with the two robberies at Evanston Township High School last Wednesday. Levertis C. P. Williams, 18, was charged with two counts of robbery. He and another male allegedly robbed two students of their smart phones in the hallways of the school. The other suspect has not yet been charged. Yates was arrested at 11:55 a.m. on May 12 at the high school. His court date is set for June 14.

Two men robbed another man at 12:20 a.m. on May 13 on the 1600 block of Fowler Avenue. The victim said he was walking on the sidewalk, talking on his Apple iPhone, when the men came up from behind him. One man punched him, knocking him to the ground, while the other went through his pockets and stole $40, credit cards and the phone, which was worth $300. The suspects were black men, one about 6-foot-3, the other about 5-foot-9. Both were wearing white shirts and fled on foot. The victim was treated on the scene by Evanston Fire & Paramedics.

A man was robbed while trying to give a panhandler money at 6:23 p.m. on May 14. The victim said he was walking down the sidewalk on the 800 block of Mulford Street when a black man about 5-foot-7 came up to him and gave him a sad story about needing money. The victim got out his wallet and was about to give the man a dollar, when the panhandler snatched the wallet and knocked the other man to the ground before fleeing. The suspect was between 40 and 50 years old and wore a tan khaki jacket, a white T-shirt, and carried an umbrella. The man stole about $70 in the wallet as well as his identification. The victim was not hurt.

 

Mob Action

Deshawn J. Thomas, 19, of Evanston and Gary D. T. Walker, 18, of Evanston were arrested and charged with mob action at 4:29 p.m. on May 13 at Foster Field on the 1600 block of Foster Street. Their court date is set for June 6.

 

Battery

Someone got hit in a 2004 Mercury taxicab at 2 a.m. on May 15 on the 500 block of Elmwood Avenue.

A man assaulted someone at 10:54 p.m. on May 12 on the 500 block of Custer Avenue. He took off in a 2010 Honda.

A man about 6-foot-1 hit someone at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Oakton Avenue at 8:30 a.m. on May 13.

Two boys fought in the street on the 200 block of Custer Avenue at 8:15 p.m. on May 13. One of them was a black male about 5-foot tall and 120 pounds.

 

Burglary

A man allegedly broke into an unlocked 1994 Honda and stole a silver Apple iPod music player, compact discs, an Air Master pump and jumper cables at 2:46 a.m. on May 13 on the 1100 block of Dewey Avenue. Hector Gonzalez, 19, of Evanston was arrested and charged with burglary on the 1100 block of Darrow Avenue. His court date is set for June 21.

Someone stole a blue Mongoose bicycle and three samurai swords from the common area of an apartment building on the 600 block of Elmwood Avenue between 12:01 a.m. on April 29 and 10:38 p.m. on May 12.

A burglar came into an apartment building through an unlocked door and stole a Radio Shack stereo mixer system from the common area between 9 a.m. on May 13 and 8 a.m. on May 14 on the 1100 block of Dewey Avenue.

A black Canon camera and a Sprint cell phone were stolen from an unlocked car parked in an alley on the 1700 block of Chicago Avenue between 4 p.m. on May 12 and 6:30 a.m. on May 13.

 

Theft

A man allegedly stole tiles, a pencil, quick set material and plants from Home Depot at 11:28 a.m. on May 13 on the 2300 block of Oakton Street. Jim Siannas, 66, of Skokie was arrested and charged with retail theft. His court date is set for June 20.

The bathroom sink and a set of wooden doors were stolen from a house between 5 p.m. on May 6 and 2 p.m. on May 12 on the 1000 block of Dodge Avenue. The suspect, a Hispanic man about 5-foot-5 and 180 pounds, is believed to have the key.

A theft of more than $500 was made at Dominick's on the 2600 block of Green Bay Road at 9:37 a.m. on May 5. The suspect is a white man about 6-foot tall and 185 pounds.

A blue leather wallet was stolen out of a purse at a chain restaurant at 1 p.m. on May 14 on the 1700 block of Sherman Avenue.

A man with a key reportedly broke into an apartment and stole cash and a credit card on May 12 on the 1500 block of Ridge Avenue. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds.

A man stole a cell phone at 10 p.m. on May 13 on the 500 block of Dodge Avenue from a vehicle. He was described as a black man about 5-foot-8 and 170 pounds.

 

Vandalism

A woman reportedly slashed the tires of a car parked on the 500 block of Custer Avenue at 6:44 p.m. on May 13 on the 700 block of Oakton Street. Deanna A. Williams 23, of Evanston was arrested and charged with criminal damage to property at 6:44 p.m. on May 13 on the corner of Oakton Street and Custer Avenue. Her court date is set for June 1.

Several cars were vandalized in an apartment building parking lot between 11:45 p.m. on May 13 and 12:48 a.m. on May 1 on the 700 block of Oakton Street. The rear window was knocked out of a 2009 Honda and a 2003 Nissan. The rear and passenger-side windows were busted out of a 2002 Ford. The vandals smashed the windshield and a rear side window of a 2010 Honda.

A 1995 Lexus and a 2007 Jeep were found vandalized at 1:26 a.m. on May 14 on the 1000 block of Greenleaf Street. The headlights, tail lights and side mirrors were broken off the Lexus, and the rear window and windshield were smashed. The door was smashed in and the side mirror broken off the Jeep.

A window at the Subway restaurant on the 1100 block of Emerson Street was broken out at 3:22 a.m. on May 15.

Someone broke out the driver's side and rear windows of a 2006 Land Rover at 12:48 a.m. on May 14 on the 2000 block of Keeney Street.

The windows of a 2002 GMC were broken out at 1:48 a.m. on May 14 on the 800 block of Hartrey Avenue.

Someone damaged the front and rear side windows of a 1999 Honda between 1:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. on May 14 on the 1700 block of Greenwood Street.

The rear window of a 2002 Honda was broken out between 6:30 p.m. on May 13 and 12:19 a.m. on May 14 on the 2600 block of Hurd Avenue.

The rear window of a 2005 Dodge was broken out between 1 p.m. on May 13 and 1 a.m. on May 14 on the 2300 block of Crawford Avenue.

The rear window of a 2007 Honda was broken out between 11:30 p.m. on May 13 and 1:14 a.m. on May 14 on the 3300 block of Dartmouth Place.

The rear side window of a 1998 Lexus was broken out between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. on May 15 on the 1800 block of Laurel Avenue.

Someone scratched the trunk and doors of a car parked on the 800 block of Judson Avenue between 5 p.m. on May 11 and 10:15 a.m. on May 12.

The front passenger door of a 2007 Ford was scratched while park on the street on the 2500 block of Prospect Avenue at 10:10 a.m. on May 14. The suspect is a white woman about 5-foot-5 and 145 pounds.

 

Domestic Battery

A 37-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 10:50 p.m. on May 12 on the 2000 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for May 18.

 

Trespassing

Shazan S. Mohammed, 26, of Chicago was arrested and charged with trespassing at 2:30 a.m. on May 13 on the 800 block of Davis Street. His court date is set for June 1.

 

Arrest Warrant

Arthur C. Cox, 45, was arrested on a warrant at 1:05 p.m. on May 12 on the 2000 block of Brummel Avenue. His court date is set for June 20.

Maurice M. McKenzie Jr., 18, of Evanston was arrested on a warrant at 5:13 p.m. on May 12 on the 1400 block of Noyes Street.

Elisheba J. Morales, 26, of Evanston was arrested on a warrant at 6:10 p.m. on May 10 on the 1700 block of Hartrey Avenue.

 

Man with Gun

Baltimore H. Yates, 19, of Evanston was arrested and charged with carrying a firearm without a permit at 9:25 a.m. on May 14 at the Evnaston Police Station. Earlier that morning he had been charged with transporting an open container of alcohol and arrested at 2:30 a.m. on the 1700 block of Monroe Street. His court date for the alcohol charge is June 29 and the date for his weapons charge is June 30.

A man was seen with a gun at 9:26 p.m. on May 12 on the 1500 block of Emerson Street. Police checked the area, but did not find him.

 

Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Joshua C. Johnson, 38, of Chicago was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia at 5:57 p.m. on May 15 on the 100 block of Custer Avenue. His court date is set for June 15.

 

Driving without a License

Jose G. Escobedo, 26, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:50 a.m. on May 13 on the 1700 block of Main Street. His court date is set for June 1.

Linda Kelsey, 53, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5:30 p.m. on May 15 on the 100 block of Chicago Avenue. Her court date is set for June 6.

Edgar Martinez, 22, of Park Ridge was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5:03 p.m. on May 13 on the 1700 block of Maple Avenue. His court date is set for June 6.

Brian A. Meyer, 42, of Skokie was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 2:18 a.m. on May 13 on the 200 block of Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for June 8.

 

Licensed Operations

Magda Moraga, 56, of Lindenhurst was arrested and charged with violating a licensed operations law at 2 p.m. on May 12 at the Evanston Police Station. A court date is set for May 18.

 

Shots Fired

Several gun shots were heard at 11:12 p.m. on May 13 on the 1700 block of Brown Avenue.
