Police Blotter May 17: Thieves Caught Stealing Fans, Diapers; Burglars Take Gun, Electronics

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Theft

A woman allegedly stole 18 cases of Enfamil formula and a package of Huggies diapers from the Target store on the 2200 block of Howard Street at 8:55 a.m. on May 15. Monica M. Boyd, 24, of Benton Harbor, Michigan, was arrested and charged with retail theft. Police said Boyd was watched leaving the store with the items in her cart without paying. The retail value of the baby formula and diapers totaled nearly $500. Her court date is set for June 14.

A man allegedly stole two ceiling fans from the Home Depot store on the 2300 block of Oakton Street at 8:08 p.m. on May 16. Zafar T. Syed, 31, of Skokie was arrested and charged with retail theft. Police said he was caught on camera and stopped by security trying to cart the fans out the door without paying. When approached, he produced receipts, but they did not match the items police said he stole. His court date is set for June 1.

A wallet was found stolen from a locker at the gym on the 1600 block of Sherman Avenue at 6:30 p.m.

A Samsung cell phone was stolen from a desk at Evanston Township High School at 12:26 p.m. on May 9 on the 1600 block of Dodge Avenue.

A man reportedly stole a Social Security card and an Illinois State ID from a purse at 11 p.m. on May 13 on the 1700 block of Simpson Street. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds.

 

Burglary

Burglars broke into a house between 9 a.m. and 3:40 p.m. on May 16 on the 2200 block of Cleveland Street and stole a Nintendo Wii gaming system, video games, a Sony digital camera, a 32-inch, flat-screen Samsung television and a Remington shotgun.

Burglars broke the front door down of a business on the 2100 block of Central Street and stole the cash register and cash at 3:03 a.m. on May 12.

A beige cash box was stolen from a medical office between 5:10 p.m. on May 13 and 8 a.m. on May 16 on the 1000 block of Central Street.

A burglar broke out a window on a 1994 Toyota and stole a Garmin Nuvi GPS device between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on May 16 on the 1000 block of Asbury Avenue.

A Sony car stereo was found ripped out of a 2002 Volkswagen at 4:21 p.m. on May 16 on the 300 block of Kedzie Street. The thief broke into the car through a passenger side door.

 

Vandalism

The glass pane of a door of a public building was found broken at 9:37 a.m. on May 16 on the 1600 block of Sheridan Road.

The rear window of a 2011 Mazda was broken out between 11 p.m. on May 13 and 1:39 p.m. on May 16 on the 1600 block of Emerson Street.

The tires of a car were slashed between 6 p.m. on May 15 and 10:10 a.m. on May 16 on the 1600 block of Dempster Street.

A rear storm window was broken out of an apartment on the 100 block of Custer Avenue at 1:31 p.m. on May 15. The suspect is a black man about 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds.

 

Domestic Battery

A 51-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 4:52 p.m. on May 14 on the 2000 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for May 25.

 

Disorderly Conduct

A 15-year-old Chicago resident was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct at 7:19 p.m. on May 16 on the 100 block of Ashland Avenue.

 

Driving under the Influence

Vanessa A. Brito, 24, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 4:55 a.m. on May 16 at the intersection of Church Street and Maple Avenue. Her court date is set for June 6.

 

Underage Consumption

A 15-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with underage consumption of alcohol at 9:05 p.m. on May 13.

 

Driving without a License

Saladin F. Abd-Al-Karim, 49, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 12:40 p.m. on May 16 on the 200 block of Ridge Avenue. A court date is set for June 20.
