Police Blotter May 24: Battery Arrest Made at YMCA; Man Accused of Making Gang Threats

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Battery

A man allegedly punched another man outside the elevator on the ground floor of the YMCA on the 1000 block of Grove Street at 6:35 p.m. on May 23. Joseph A. Baines, 31, of Evanston was arrested and charged with battery. Police said the other man made a comment he didn't like, so Baines hit him on the side of the head several times, something he denied. The other man had visible wounds to his face and police said that YMCA staff had reported Baines had acted agitatedly with them. His court date is set for June 20.

A man allegedly drew a knife, hurled gang epithets and threatened people on a porch on the 1800 block of Hovland Court at 3:44 p.m. on May 23. Don A. McKenzie, 20, of Skokie was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Police said he shouted “GD,” meaning Gangster Disciples and told them to come off the porch. They said McKenzie ditched the four-inch knife in the bushes upon their arrival. His court date is set for June 6.

Two men fought at the YMCA at 10:30 a.m. on May 23 on the 1000 block of Grove Street. The suspects are two white men, one 5-foot-8 and 250 pounds, the other 6-foot tall and 150 pounds.

Murder

Darien L. Marquez-Connerly, 19, of Chicago was arrested and charged with first degree murder at 12:35 p.m. on May 22 on the 7500 block of North Ridge Boulevard in Chicago. His court date is set for June 21.

 

Burglary

Someone broke out the front passenger window of a 2004 Honda between 2:30 a.m. and 5:37 a.m. on May 23 on the 1000 block of Florence Avenue. A black Sony X-Plode car stereo was stolen along with an Apple iPod Touch music player and cash.

Someone broke out the front driver's side window of a 2008 Hyundai and stole a black Garmin GPS device between 1 p.m. on May 22 and 8 a.m. on May 23 on the 1400 block of Pitner Avenue.

 

Theft

A boy reportedly went into a house through an unlocked door and stole cash between 10 p.m. on May 22 and 7:30 a.m. on May 23 on the 1800 block of Lemar Avenue. The suspect is a black male about 5-foot-3 and 132 pounds.

A boy reportedly stole a black Trek bicycle at 7:27 p.m. on May 23 on the 500 block of Sheridan Road. The suspect is a black male about 5-foot-2 and 80 pounds.

A backpack containing a white Apple laptop, books and headphones was stolen off a porch between 6 p.m. on May 21 and 10 a.m. on May 22 on the 1000 block of Foster Street.

A purple and pink Scattante W330 bicycle was stolen off a rack at 3:45 p.m. on May 23 on the 2600 block of Ridge Avenue.

A red 26-inch Schwinn bicycle was stolen off a rack at 1:33 p.m. on May 23 in front of the YMCA on the 1000 block of Grove Street.

Someone stole a white Sprint HTC Evo cell phone from the Food 4 Less store on the 2400 block of Main Street at 5 p.m. on May 23.

 

Drug Dealing

Eugene Findley, 31, of Evanston was arrested and charged with the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance at 8:40 p.m. on March 13 on the 2100 block of West Howard Street in Chicago. His court date is set for June 14.

 

Vandalism

A woman allegedly broke out the passenger-side window of a 2001 Ford and the driver's side mirror at 9:35 p.m. on May 21 on the 2100 block of Oakton Street. Fadimatou Fadimatou, 39, of Chicago was arrested and charged with criminal damage to vehicle. Her court date is set for June 1.

A man allegedly damaged the glass kitchen door of an apartment on the 2100 block of Emerson Street at 12:58 a.m. on May 22. Terrence T. McClay, 28, of Rock Island was arrested and charged with criminal damage to property. His court date is set for June 1.

Someone tagged the slide with graffiti at Eiden Park on the 700 block of Madison Street.

 

Driving under the Influence

Llyse A. Leland, 50, of Skokie was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 2 a.m. on May 23 on the 8600 block of McCormick Boulevard in Skokie. Her court date is set for June 27.

 

Domestic Battery

A 26-year-old Evanston woman was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 5:30 a.m. on May 22 on the 1700 block of Dempster Street. Her court date is set for May 25.

A 50-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 5:33 a.m. on May 22 on the 1300 block of Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for June 1.

 

Public Indecency

Kenneth Ross, 29, of Evanston was arrested and charged with public indecency at 8:18 p.m. on May 22 on the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue. His court date is set for June 20.

 

Marijuana Possession

Benetta H. Welsh, 46, of Chicago was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 7:52 p.m. on May 21 on the 100 block of Elmwood Avenue. Her court date is set for June 15.

 

Arrest Warrant

Monica M. Boyd, 24, of Chicago was arrested on a warrant at 11:51 a.m. on May 22 on the corner of West Birchwood Avenue and North Wolcott Avenue in Chicago.

Scott A. Locke, 28, of Evanston was arrested on a warrant at 7:55 a.m. on May 20 on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue.

 

Driving without a License

Jeffrey J. Kuffell, 47, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:15 a.m. on May 22 on the 300 block of Sheridan Road. His court date is set for June 20.
