Police Blotter Nov. 8: Teen Knocked Down in Robbery Attempt Near NU Campus

The following arrest information was supplied by the Evanston police department. It does not indicate a conviction.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Robbery

A man was knocked down on the sidewalk by four men who tried to steal his iPhone at 12:11 a.m. on Saturday, just off Northwestern University campus at Orrington Avenue and Emerson Street. The men kicked him on the ground, but they ran away without taking the phone, which he resisted handing to them. The suspects were all black men in their 20s. The victim was 19 years old.

Assault

A man allegedly assaulted someone at a house on the 1500 block of Florence Avenue at 8:24 a.m. on Sunday. Curtis Gilbert, 53, of Evanston was arrested and charged with trespassing. His court date is set for Nov. 28.

 

Burglary

A Hewlett-Packard laptop, cash and a Samsunc cell phone were stolen out of a secured locker at L.A. Fitness gym on the 1600 block of Sherman Avenue between 8:25 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Monday.

A red backpack and cash were stolen out of an unlocked 2008 Toyota parked in a driveway on the 1500 block of Judson Avenue between 7 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. on Monday.

Two boys tried to break into a business through the window on the 3000 block of Central Street between 5:25 p.m. and 6:25 p.m. The suspects are white male boys, one 5-foot tall and the other 4-foot-5.

A PlayStation was stolen from an apartment on the 700 block of Dobson Street between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Monday.

 

Theft

A woman improperly used a food stamps Link Card between Thursday and Monday at Food 4 Less on the 2400 block of Main Street. The suspect is a black woman about 5-foot-5 and 140 pounds.

A computer part was reported stolen from a package in the mail area of an apartment building on the 1500 block of Sherman Avenue at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

A Coach wallet was stolen from an unsecured locker at Evanston Township High School between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday on the 1600 block of Dodge Avenue.

A helmet was taken from a package in the mail area of an apartment building on the 1200 block of Emerson Street at 5:45 p.m. on Nov. 1.

 

Vandalism

A man allegedly sprayed graffiti on the Metra right-of-way on the corner of Lincoln Street and Green Bay Road at 3:20 a.m. on Monday. Police arrested Daniel K. Schwartz, 21, of Evanston and charged him with criminal defacement to property. Schwartz was also charged with five other counts of graffiti, much of citing his anti-immigration political views. His court date is set for Dec. 21.

A woman allegedly damaged a glass storm door on a house on the 1700 block of Grey Avenue at 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

White graffiti was sprayed in a park on the 2200 block of Foster Street between 10 a.m. on Friday and 10 a.m.on Monday.

 

Domestic Battery

A 22-year-old Chicago man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 8:05 p.m. on Friday on the 100 block of Custer Avenue. His court date is set for Wednesday.

A 23-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 1:35 a.m. on Sunday on the 2100 block of Brummel Street. His court date is set for Wednesday.

 

Driving without a License

Enrique Garcia, 53, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 3:24 p.m. on Sunday on the 1900 block of Main Street. His court date is set for Dec. 29.

Wilbert Ocampo, 27, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 11 a.m. on Friday on the 700 block of Sheridan Road. His court date is set for Nov. 23.

Rogelio Tapia, 33, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 1:40 p.m. on Friday on the 1700 block of Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for Dec. 29.

A 16-year-old Winthrop Harbor resident was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 3 a.m. on Monday on the 1900 block of Dempster Street.

 

Underage Consumption

Maurice M. McKenzie, 19, of Evanston and a 17-year-old Evanston resident were arrested and charged with underage possession of alcohol at 1:34 a.m. on Monday at the corner of Keeney Street and Sheridan Road. His court date is set for Dec. 14.
