Police Blotter Oct. 11: Bike Thief Caught Pedaling Away; Man Harassed by Boss on Job's Last Day

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Battery

A man leaving his workplace on the last day on the job was pushed and prodded by his former boss as he left at 8:50 a.m. on Wednesday on the 2100 block of Greenleaf Street. The man said his old boss berated him as he left and demanded to know the contents of his bag, accusing him of stealing. The boss followed him into the parking lot and stood between his car door and the car, preventing him from leaving. He reportedly shoved him in the chest and poked him with his finger till he opened the bag, and proved he had stolen nothing. The former employee was allowed to leave, but he drove immediately to the police station to report the incident.

A man hit someone with a crowbar, fracturing the person’s ankle at 4 a.m. on Sept. 19 on the 800 block of Main Street. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds.

Theft

A woman reported her pink Electra cruiser bike had been stolen between 2:45 p.m. and 3 p.m. on the 200 block of Callan Avenue on Wednesday. She had left it unlocked under the back stairs of her apartment, but when she went back outside, it was gone. Before police arrived, they allegedly saw Octavius Miles, 20, of Evanston riding near the corner of Austin Street and Sherman Avenue on a pink bike. After speaking with the vicim, they went looking for Miles and found him at the corner of Howard Street and North Hoyne Avenue in Chicago at 4:05 p.m. Miles was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property. Police said he told them he bought the bike off someone else. His court date is set for Nov. 16.

A locked Trek bicycle was stolen off the sidewalk on the 1000 block of Davis Street at 3:22 p.m. on Wednesday.

A license plate was reported stolen at 1:34 p.m. on Tuesday on the 700 block of Brummel Street.

 

Burglary

A car was broken into on the 200 block of Grey Avenue and jewelry, and iPod touch music player and a Garmin GPS device were stolen between 4 p.m. on Tuesday and 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

An unlocked 1999 Honda on the 200 block of Grey Avenue was also broken into between 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday and a car stereo, cash and compact discs were stolen.

 

Drug Possession

Bernard Sayles, 56, of Evanston was arrested and charged with drug possession at 1:35 a.m. on Wednesday on the 2000 block of Darrow Avenue. His court date is set for Nov. 2.
