Police Blotter Oct. 19: Man Gashes Head in Fight; Home Depot Thief Returns to Store

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A man reported to police that he had been shoved to the ground on the 2100 block of Dempster Street at 4:04 p.m. on Monday, hitting his head on the curb, causing a bloody gash. Police spoke to the man as he was laying in the back of a van on the 2400 block of Dempster Street. Police said the victim was highly intoxicated, which may have contributed to his bad fall. His assailant was an acquaintance, a black man about 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds who wore a red jacket and blue jeans. Police apprehended the man, but the victim did not wish to pursue charges. The man was treated on the scene by paramedics.

Theft

An Evanston man was arrested at Home Depot on Tuesday after he returned to the store that police accused him of stealing a vacuum cleaner earlier this month. Henry W. Moriarty, 47, was charged with retail theft. On about Oct. 4, police said Moriarty and an accomplice stole two cartloads of merchandise from Home Depot. One of them just walked out the store with his cart, and the other pretended that he had bought the items and refunded them for store credit. Police said Moriarty had stolen $152 of items, including the vacuum and some valves. His court date is set for Nov. 23.

A locked pink Schwinn bicycle was reported stolen from an apartment common area at 10 a.m. on Tuesday on the 2300 block of Central Street.

A Samsung cell phone was taken from an unsecured locker at Haven Middle School on the 2400 block of Prairie Avenue between 12:47 p.m. and 1:27 p.m. on Oct. 13.

 

Burglary

A burglar knocked out a window of a 1993 Honda and stole two bank cards and a Massachusetts I.D. card between 2:10 p.m. and 2:35 p.m. on Tuesday on the 2100 block of Ridge Avenue.

An unlocked 2006 Mercury was broken into between 4 p.m. on Sunday and 8 a.m. on Tuesday on the 1900 block of Brummel Street.

 

Obstruction of Justice

Porsha K. Tan, 19, of Algonquin was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice at 4:36 p.m. on Tuesday on the 1700 block of Sherman Avenue. Her court date is set for Nov. 1.

 

Driving under the Influence

Benjamin J. Gasbarra, 23, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 5:10 a.m. on Tuesday on the 1600 block of Davis Street. His court date is set for Nov. 8.

 

Arrest Warrant

Roberto Alvarez, 20, of Highland Park was arrested on a warrant at 11:25 on Saturday on the corner of Green Bay Road and Lincoln Street.

Michael Baptiste, 20, of Evanston was arrested on a 2009 warrant at 1 a.m. on Friday on the 1900 block of Ridge Avenue.

Lawrence R. Kinnucan, 59, of Evanston was arrested on a warrant at 5:12 p.m. on Sunday on the 1600 block of Benson Avenue.

Derrick L. Orr, 24, of Country Club Hills was arrested on a pair of warrants at 3:25 p.m. on Oct. 13 on the 2400 block of Main Street.

Maxwell J. Perrotta, 20, of Downers Grove was arrested on a warrant at 12:36 a.m. on Friday on the 1200 block of Chicago Avenue.

 

Vandalism

A garage was tagged with graffiti between 9 p.m. on Monday and 7:10 a.m. on Tuesday on the 1200 block of Pitner Avenue.
