Police Blotter Oct. 3: Two Men Rob Cabbie; Another Man Arrested in Beating Over Shoes

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Battery

Two men allegedly stiffed a cab driver and then tried to rob him of his cash on Thursday night between 8 and 11 p.m. The cab driver picked up Lee G. Armstrong, 31, of Evanston and Locksley O. Creary, 34, of Bolingbrook at the corner of Wells and Monroe streets in the downtown Chicago Loop at 8 p.m. Creary and Armstrong asked to be taken to the one man’s girlfriend’s place at the corner of Dodge Avenue and Howard Street in Evanston. When the cab came to that corner, Creary ran out of the cab and the driver demanded that Armstrong should pay, but he refused. Police said Creary then came up to the driver’s window as the driver was looking backward, stole about $80 from the center console. He struggled with the driver, twisting his shoulder before dropping most of the cash and fleeing with Armstrong. Chicago and Evanston Police were called and Armstrong and Creary were picked up and arrested at 11:06 p.m. on the 1500 block of Howard Street.  Armstrong was charged with theft; Creary was charged with theft and battery. Their court date is set for Nov. 14.

An additional man was arrested in connection with the Sept. 20 battery in which a man was beat up for his shoes on the 1800 block of Lyons Avenue. Darius Morales, 21, of Skokie was arrested and charged with battery at 6 p.m. on Friday. Police said he had been among the group of young adult males who were kicking and punching the victim while he was on the ground. His court date is set for Oct. 18.

Two coworkers were fighting at a restaurant on the 600 block of Davis Street at 11 p.m. on Friday. The feud was reportedly started by a Hispanic man about 5-foot-6 and 160 pounds.

A 14-year-old and a 15-year-old Evanston resident were arrested and charged with battery at 5:59 p.m. on Sunday on the 1700 block of Maple Avenue.

 

Burglary

Burglars entered a house through a kitchen window and stole a black Apple laptop computer, gold rings and jewelry and a silver 120 gigabyte Apple iPod music player between 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday on the 1600 block of Washington Street.

A man knocked out a window of a 2004 BMW while it was parked in a driveway on the 500 block of Custer Avenue at 7:05 p.m. on Sunday and stole a Tom Tom GPS device. The suspect is a Hispanic man about 6-foot tall.

A resident noticed a number of items had been stolen from an apartment on the 700 block of Reba Place between Aug. 1 and Saturday, but there was never any sign of forced entry. Earrings, placemats, a power strip and a North Face jacket were missing.

Someone broke out the front passenger window of a 2005 Ford at 10 p.m. on Saturday and stole cash from inside the car on the 100 block of Clyde Avenue.

A burglar broke out the window of a 2007 Volvo and stole a black GPS device at 6 p.m. on Saturday on the 600 block of Brummel Street.

A burglar stole cash from an unlocked 2007 Jaguar parked on the street on the 200 block of Callan Avenue between noon and 10 p.m. on Saturday.

A burglar stole a black Apple iPhone with a charger and a teal case from an unlocked 2006 Hummer Truck at 4 p.m. on Thursday on the 2300 block of Howard Street.

Two men broke out the front driver-side window of a 2009 Honda at 7:43 p.m. on Sunday, but nothing was stolen from the car. The suspects are black men, one about 6-foot and the other about 5-foot-9.

Burglars smashed in the front door of a barber beauty shop on the 600 block of Chicago Avenue, but nothing was stolen at 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

A 16-year-old Chicago resident was arrested and charged with burglary at 11:12 p.m. on Saturday on the 400 block of Sherman Avenue.

 

Theft

A woman suddenly noticed her purse missing from her shoulder while she rode the bus somewhere in Evanston between 8:18 a.m. and 8:28 a.m. on Friday.

A man allegedly stole spray paint from the Home Depot hardware store at 12:40 p.m. on Saturday on the 2300 block of Oakton Street. Marco A. Estrade, 23, of Chicago was arrested and charged with retail theft. His court date is set for Dec. 7.

A second man allegedly stole tools from the Home Depot at 2:48 p.m. on Sunday on the 2300 block of Oakton Street. Police arrested Roberto Castillo, 38, of Chicago and charged him with retail theft at 3 p.m. His court date is set for Nov. 1.

A man stole a blue Free Spirit bicycle from a house porch on the 700 block of Case Street at 5:01 p.m. on Friday.

Someone stole an HTC cell phone and a Samsung cell phone from a chain business on the 1700 block of Sherman Avenue at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Someone stole a Magnum bicycle off a house porch between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Friday on the 1900 block of Darrow Avenue.

 

Vandalism

Someone threw a brick through the passenger window of a 2009 BMW at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday on the 1200 block of Elmwood Avenue.

 

Driving under the Influence

Joel E. Erenberg, 55, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 5:05 a.m. on Sunday on the 2200 block of Oakton Street. His court date is set for Oct. 18.

Eliahu H. Karbal, 23, of Skokie was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 12:35 a.m. on Sunday on the 3600 block of Dempster Street in Skokie. His court date is set for Nov. 1.

 

Arrest Warrant

Nakia T. Banks, 33, of Waukegan was arrested on a warrant at 8 a.m. on Friday on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue.

 

Driving without a License

Wesley E. Collins, 55, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9:48 a.m. on Saturday on the 300 block of Howard Street. His court date is set for Oct. 18.

Kevin Gilbert, 46, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 11:30 p.m. on Friday on the 8500 block of McCormick Boulevard in Skokie. His court date is set for Nov. 8.

Roberto C. Puente Muniz, 32, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 4:07 p.m. on Friday on the 1100 block of Lake Street. His court date is set for Nov. 16.

Benito Valladares, 29, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 12:20 p.m. on Saturday on the 2200 block of Howard Street. His court date is set for Oct. 20.

 

Possession of Air Rifle

A 17-year-old Chicago resident was arrested and charged with possessing an air rifle at Jewel-Osco grocery store on the 2400 block of Howard Street at 4:55 p.m. on Friday.
