Police Blotter Sept. 1: Man Charged with Cutting Pay Phone Cord; Elderly Woman Victim of Burglary Ruse

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A one-time employee of a pay phone company has been arrested and charged with cutting the cord of a competing pay phone company at the Shell station on the 500 block of Dodge Avenue on April 18 or 19. Brian Esterman, 58, of Lake Forest was arrested at 9:26 a.m. at the Evanston Police Station on Wednesday and charged with criminal damage to property. Police said video surveillance at the Shell station caught a man who looked like Esterman cutting the cord of the pay phone. Esterman's 1999 GMC van was also seen on camera at the time. Police said Esterman had a previous arrest for vandalism to pay phones in Lake County. His court date is set for Oct. 5.

A storage shed was marked with graffiti on Aug. 30 or Aug. 31 on the 1100 block of Church Street.

Burglary

Three men stole jewelry and cash from an 80-year-old woman in a burglary scheme at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday on the 800 block of Oakton Street. She told police that an olive-skinned man in his 20s came to her apartment door and told her he needed hot water to mix up some concrete. She let him in to use the kitchen, and then went to the bathroom. When she came out, the man was gone. In her bedroom, she noticed gold, silver and diamond jewelry had been stolen from a bag along with $40 cash. The man had a stocky build and he wore blue jeans and tennis shoes. An eyewitness on the street saw two other men, with a similar complexion. One was in his early 20s, about 5-10 and 150 pounds and wore a white T-shirt and a black ball cap along with jeans. The other man was a tall, burly man in his 40s wearing a long dark polo shirt.

Burglars forced open the side door of a garage and stole a 42-inch and a 52-inch Panasonic television, a dining room table and a couch between 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 30 and 9 a.m. on Aug. 31 on the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue.

A burglar broke the window of a 2006 Saab and stole a black Dell laptop computer and a gray GPS device between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 on the 2600 block of Ridge Avenue.

A burglar broke into an unlocked 2011 Ford parked in the driveway of a house on the 2700 block of Ridge Avenue between 11 p.m. on Aug. 30 and 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 31. Cash and an Apple iPod music player were stolen.

A burglar broke a window of a 2008 Toyota in a parking lot on the 2600 block of Ridge Avenue between 9:40 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 31. A black Garmin GPS device was stolen.

A burglar knocked out a window of a second car in the parking lot on the 2600 block of Ridge Avenue between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 31. A GPS device was stolen from the 2008 Honda.

 

Theft

A man reportedly stole a box tape from Home Depot at 2:08 p.m. on Aug. 31 on the 2300 block of Oakton Street. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-10 and 150 pounds. He drove off in a 1999 Chrysler.

A man and a woman reportedly stole Enfamil baby formula and food from the Target store on the 2200 block of Howard Street at 3:48 p.m. on Aug. 29. The suspects were a black man and woman; the man was about 6-foot and 180 pounds and the woman was 5-foot-5 and 180 pounds. They drove a 1995 Nissan.

A specialized bicycle was stolen from an apartment common area between 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 30 and 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 on the 700 block of Brummel Street.

A locked blue and green Schwinn bicycle was stolen from a municipal parking lot on the 300 block of Dodge Avenue between 5:45 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Aug. 30.

 

Driving under the Influence

Naveen Dutt, 24, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 11:57 p.m. on Aug. 30 on the 1300 block of Greenleaf Street. A court date is set for Oct. 5.

 

Drug Possession

Anthony T. Grier, 44, of Evanston was arrested and charged with drug possession at 4:47 a.m. on Aug. 31 on the 1500 block of Emerson Street. His court date is set for Oct. 6.

 

Driving without a License

Adelina O. Arreguin, 43, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9:26 a.m. on Aug. 29 on the 1100 block of Oakton Street. Her court date is set for Oct. 13.

Novelette A. Campbell, 39, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 31 on the 7500 block of North Claremont Avenue in West Rogers Park, Chicago. Her court date is set for Oct. 13.

Rogelio Mejias-Gomez, 24, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 7:20 p.m. on Aug. 31 on the 1700 block of Grey Avenue. His court date is set for Oct. 11.

 

Shots Fired

A gun shot was heard at 4:28 a.m. on Aug. 31 on the 2100 block of Hartrey Avenue.
