Police Blotter Sept. 14: Man Shot in Stomach on Brown Avenue; Cop Assaulted on Judson

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Assault & Battery

Two men shot a 28-year-old man in the stomach at 3:07 a.m. on Tuesday on the 1700 block of Brown Avenue. He was found lying in the street. Witnesses gave varying accounts, but the suspects are believed to be black men, one about 6-foot-2. One wore a black T-shirt and the other wore a white T-shirt. The victim was placed in a hospital and was unable to immediately give any information to police.

A man allegedly assaulted a police officer at his house on the 1200 block of Judson Avenue at 11:05 p.m. on Monday. Police arrested James P. Foydel, 54, of Evanston and charged him with aggravated assault at 11:45 p.m. Police came to his residence after reports of a disturbance from neighbors. Police said Foydel became hostile towards police and threatened one of them with physical harm. His court date is set for Oct. 5.

A woman assaulted someone at the Evanston Public Library on the 1700 block of Orrington Avenue at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

 

Burglary

A thermostat, a mirror and an intercom were reported stolen from a condominium at 3 p.m. on Sept. 6 on the 200 block of Custer Avenue.

 

Theft

A woman reportedly stole a hooded vest, rings, bracelets and necklaces from a business on the 600 block of Davis Street at 12:26 p.m. on Saturday. The suspect is a black woman about 5-foot-9 and 135 pounds.

A couple reportedly stole a candy bar and a soft drink from a gas station on the 1900 block of Green Bay Road at noon on Tuesday. The suspects are a black man about 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds and his female companion, a black woman about 5-foot-8 and 275 pounds.

A man allegedly stole Miller beer from the Jewel-Osco grocery on the 2400 block of Howard Street at 1:26 p.m. on Monday. Police arrested Richard D. Ross, 47, of Chicago and charged him with retail theft at 1:50 p.m. His court date is set for Oct. 6.

A second man allegedly stole batteries and pork chops from the Jewel-Osco grocery on the 2400 block of Howard Street at 4:59 a.m. on Tuesday. Police arrested Vasyl Maksymets, 52, of Chicago and charged him with retail theft. His court date is set for Oct. 5.

Medication was reportedly stolen from a customer's purse while she was at the Jewel-Osco grocery on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue at 7 p.m. on Sunday.

A backpack was reported stolen from the Evanston Public Library at 12:41 p.m. on Monday on the 1700 block of Orrington Avenue.

A man took a Denver boot off a 1985 Ford at 9 a.m. on Tuesday on the 500 block of Barton Avenue.

Two locked bicycles were stolen from a common area of an apartment building on the 800 block of Reba Place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday. One was a Schwinn and the other from Sears.

A locked bicycle was found missing from a bike rack at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday on the 1700 block of Orrington Avenue.

 

Vandalism

The side mirror of a 2011 Volkwagen was damaged while it was parked on the street on the 2100 block of Livingston Street between 9 a.m. and 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday.

 

Domestic Battery

A 46-year-old Evanston woman was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday on the 1100 block of Asbury Avenue. Her court date is set for next Wednesday.

 

Marijuana Possession

Bijon N. Griffin, 27, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 10:24 p.m. on Tuesday on the 1700 block of McDaniel Avenue. His court date is set for Oct. 5.

 

Driving without a License

Roy V. Fernandes, 22, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday on the corner of Keeney Street and Sheridan Road. His court date is set for Oct. 5.
