Police Blotter Sept. 26: Robber Pistol-Whips Victim; Second Robbery Knocks Man Unconscious

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Robbery

A man was approached by another man in a ski mask who drew a pistol and demanded his property at 2:54 a.m. on Friday on the 1500 block of Fowler Avenue. The gunman hit him him in the head with the gun and then fired once into the ground to scare the victim, police said. The victim gave up a credit card and a $400 Sprint Evo 3D cell phone to the robber, who was a black man about 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds in his 20s wearing a black hood and black pants.

A man was robbed and knocked unconscious between 9:15 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. on Friday on the 1700 block of Grey Avenue. The victim said the last thing he remembered,  he saw someone run up behind him and knock him upside the head. When he awoke about an hour later, he was laying on the ground and $250 had been stolen.

Two armed men demanded a victim's wallet at 12:12 a.m. on Sunday on the corner of Simpson Street and Orrington Avenue, but they left without taking the wallet. The suspects are black men about 6-foot tall.

 

Battery

A man allegedly hit someone with a blunt object at a house on the 2100 block of Darrow Avenue at 12:55 a.m. on Sunday. Prince S. Campbell, 28, of Evanston was arrested and charged with battery at 1:27 a.m. His court date is set for Nov. 8.

Vileen O. Shah, 67, of Niles was arrested and charged with battery at 4:24 p.m. on Friday at the Evanston Police Station. His court date is set for Nov. 8.

A boy shot someone in the leg with a BB gun at 8:17 a.m. on Sept. 15 on the corner of Prairie Avenue and Colfax Street. The suspect is a black male about 5-foot-3 and 120 pounds.

Two women punched someone in the face at 5:30 p.m. on Friday on the 1800 block of Church Street. The suspects are black women, one of whom was about 5-foot-5 and 200 pounds.

A man punched someone at 10 p.m. on Friday at the corner of Church Street and Hartrey Avenue. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-7 and 200 pounds.

A woman punched an acquaintance in the face at 8 p.m. last Wednesday in someone's lawn on the 1800 block of Lyons Avenue. The suspect is a black woman about 5-foot tall and 140 pounds.

 

Theft

A silver 2001 Honda S2000 was stolen off the street on the 900 block of Michigan Avenue at 1:40 a.m. on Saturday.

A white 1997 Plymouth minivan was stolen from a parking lot on the 100 block of Ridge Avenue between 10 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

A man borrowed a green 2001 Jeep Cherokee three weeks ago and failed to return it, prompting its owner to file a stolen vehicle claim at 3 p.m. on Saturday on the 1600 block of Fowler Avenue. The suspect is a black man about 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds.

Natasha O. Dennison, 39, of Evanston was arrested and charged with retail theft at 4:31 p.m. on Sunday at the Evanston Police Station. Her court date is set for Oct. 13.

A woman stole clothing from a house on the 2400 block of Church Street between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. The suspect is a black woman about 5-foot-6 and 140 pounds.

A purse was stolen off the back of a chair at a restaurant on the 1500 block of Sherman Avenue at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

A metal chair was stolen from someone's lawn on the 1400 block of Fowler Avenue between 9 p.m. last Wednesday and 3 a.m. on Thursday.

Coins were stolen from a washer and dryer in the laundry room of an apartment building between 9 a.m. last Wednesday and 9 a.m. on Saturday on the 2100 block of Howard Street.

Coins were taken from washer and dryer coin boxes in an apartment building on the 900 block of Mulford Street between 7 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Coins were reported stolen from washer and dryer coin boxes in an apartment building on the 600 block of Mulford Street at 6:36 p.m. on Friday.

An unlocked gray and silver Razor scooter was reported stolen at 5:25 p.m. on Sunday on the 500 block of Wesley Avenue.

A Schwinn bicycle was locked to a sign inside an apartment building common area when it was reported stolen at 3 a.m. on Saturday on the 700 block of Foster Street.

A Delmar Schwinn beach bicycle that was locked to a tree was reported  stolen at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday on the 1400 block of Dobson Street.

A set of keys was stolen after it was left in the door between 10 a.m. and 7:15 p.m. on Thursday on the 700 block of Howard Street.

 

Burglary

Burglars broke into a house on the 1900 block of Asbury Avenue with a pry bar between noon and 4 p.m. on Friday. A black Asus laptop computer, a Kindle e-book reader, an Apple iPod music player and a Canon hand bar grip were stolen.

Burglars came into a house through an unlocked window on the 2100 block of Darrow Avenue and stole jewelry, a VCR, shoes and a microwave between 7 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday.

Cash, compact discs, books and a charged were stolen out of a 1999 Honda between 10 p.m. on Sept. 3 and 8 a.m. on Sept. 4 on the 2600 block of Thayer Street.

Someone pried the padlock off an apartment storage locker and stole a Diamondback bicycle between 7 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday and the 900 block of Mulford Street.

A Trek bicycle was stolen from an unlocked garage between 11 a.m. on Sept. 17 and 4 p.m. on Thursday on the 3200 block of Park Place.

A Fuji camera was stolen out of an unlocked 2012 Ford between 2 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday on the 1100 block of Wesley Avenue.

An unlocked 2006 Honda was broken into and a silver Garmin GPS device and a phone charger were stolen between 6 p.m. last Wednesday and 7 a.m. on Thursday on the 500 block of Forest Avenue.

 

Vandalism

A car drove off with the gas pump still attached from the Shell station on the 2400 block of Oakton Street between 11:30 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. on Friday.

Someone smashed the windshield of a 1998 Chrysler at 11:40 p.m. on Thursday on the 1800 block of Lyons Street.

Someone threw a rock through the rear window of a 2000 Nissan between 9 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday on the 800 block of Greenwood Street.

Two men sprayed graffiti in a park on the 100 block of Elmwood Avenue at 5:36 p.m. on Sunday.

Graffiti was sprayed on a state-owned 1998 Ford between 4:15 p.m. on Friday and 9:15 a.m. on Saturday on the 1700 block of Main Street.

 

Domestic Battery

A 32-year-old Skokie man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 4:25 a.m. on Friday on the 1800 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for Wednesday.

 

Driving under the Influence

Mark A. Gerontzos, 21, of Niles was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 4:10 a.m. on Saturday on the 1200 block of Mulford Street. His court date is set for Oct. 18.

 

Marijuana Possession

Terrance M. Sanders, 22, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 7:28 p.m. on Thursday on the 1400 block of Grey Avenue. His court date is set for Oct. 7.

 

Driving without a License

Ralph Handelman, 43, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 1:20 a.m. on Friday on the 1300 block of Lee Street. His court date is set for Oct. 13.

Daniel Medina, 18, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 10 a.m. on Friday on the 800 block of Hinman Street. His court date is set for Oct. 5.

Americo Pino, 28, of Morton Grove was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 10:05 p.m. on Sunday on the 1900 block of Ridge Avenue. His court date is set for Oct. 20.

 

Shots Fired/Man with Gun

A man was spotted with a gun at 4:59 p.m. on Thursday on the 700 block of Dobson Street. Police checked the area, but nothing was found.

Gun shots were heard at 10 p.m. on Saturday on the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue.

 

Illegal Tobacco Sales

David B. Beverly, 49, was arrested and charged with selling tobacco without a license at 12:40 p.m. on Saturday at the Evanston Police Station. His court date is set for Oct. 27.
