Police Blotter Sept. 6: Two Shootings over Holiday Weekend; Three Motorbikes Stolen

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A man brought another man back to his apartment after a night of socializing and the guest allegedly ended up shooting at his host. The shooting occurred early Sunday morning on the 900 block of Elmwood Avenue. The two men got into a fight at 1 a.m. and both suffered facial injuries when police said Willie R. Britton, 28, of Waukegan pulled out a handgun and tried to rob the other man. He allegedly fired a gunshot inside the apartment and then forced the man to drive to an ATM in his 2007 Volkswagen. The victim drove to Skokie and deliberately wrecked the car at 3:51 a.m. on the corner of Golf Road and Skokie Boulevard. Both men then fled the car. Skokie Police arrested Britton and then turned him over to Evanston Police, who charged him with aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful restraint.

Two 20-year-old men were walking down the sidewalk on the 1400 block of Church Street at 8:16 p.m. on Friday night when a group of four black teenage males came up to them on bicycles and tried to rob them. One of the teenagers pointed a pistol at the men, who then fled west to Mason Park. The men said they heard the gun fire and then the boys fled east on their bikes. One of the cyclists had a green shirt, one had an orange shirt and the one who had the gun was wearing a white T-shirt. Police checked the area but could not find the cyclists.

Victor Romero, 28, of Chicago was arrested and charged with battery at 3:16 a.m. Saturday on the 1900 block of Dempster Street. His court date is set for Sept. 27.

A man pushed someone to the ground at 9:32 p.m. on Friday on the 1900 block of Main Street. The suspect is a black man about 6-foot tall and 250 pounds.

A man struck someone in the left side of the face at a shelter on the 1400 block of Chicago Avenue between 6:30 p.m. and 6:50 p.m. on Aug. 29. The suspect is a black male about 5-foot-6 and 130 pounds.

Two men shoved someone to the ground in a lawn on the 1200 block of Oak Avenue at 2:15 a.m. early Monday morning. The suspects are black men, one 5-foot-10 and 150 pounds; the other 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds.

 

Child Endangerment

Mary O. Foriwaa, 33, of Evanston was arrested and charged with child endangerment at 7 p.m. on Sunday on the 100 block of Clyde Avenue. Her court date is set for Oct. 18.

 

Theft

A blue 2004 Suzuki motorcycle with white lettering was stolen from an apartment building parking lot between 10 p.m. on Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday on the 1600 block of Monroe Street.

A silver and black 1979 Puch Magnum moped was stolen off the street between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Friday on the 1400 block of Pitner Avenue.

A blue 2008 Lance scooter was stolen off the street between 11 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday on the 1400 block of Dewey Avenue.

A man passed out at 3 a.m. on Friday and awoke to find two men stealing his Iron Horse 27-1/2-inch frame bicycle on the 1700 block of Main Street. He saw the thieves put the bike in their car.

A dark blue Vera Bradley billfold was stolen along with an LG cell phone and some cash after the items were left unattended at the park on the 2700 block of Gross Point Road between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Monday.

A man stole a woman's maroon snakeskin purse while she was washing her clothes at a laundromat on the 700 block of Howard Street. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-8.

Clothing that a person was washing was reported stolen from an apartment building laundry room at 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 31 on the 400 block of Callan Avenue.

A man allegedly stole food from the Target store on the 2200 block of Howard Street at 9:50 a.m. last Thursday. Timothy J. Brown, 43, of Des Plaines was arrested and charged with retail theft at 10:20 a.m. His court date is set for Oct. 6.

A man allegedly stole liquor from the Dominick's grocery on the 1900 block of Dempster Street at 5:03 p.m. on Sunday. Timothy Smith, 52, of Evanston was arrested and charged with retail theft at 5:15 p.m. His court date is set for Oct. 18.

A man reportedly stole liquor from the Dominick's grocery on the 1900 block of Dempster Street at 1:39 p.m. on Sunday. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds.

A lock was found removed from a storage locker at 12:51 p.m. on Monday on the 800 block of Washington Street. A jazz record, exercise equipment, Coleman camping gear and REI camping posts were reported stolen.

Someone broke the lock of a storage locker and stole a Gary Fisher, a Giant and a Schwinn bicycle between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31 on the 800 block of Forest Avenue.

A locked dark red Trek bicycle was reported stolen from a lawn on the 800 block of Forest Avenue at 12:49 p.m. on Aug. 24.

A locked blue Schwinn 17-inch girls' bicycle was reported stolen at 2 p.m. on Monday on the 400 block of Sherman Avenue.

An unlocked Navy blue Schwinn bicycle was reported stolen out of a lawn on the 1100 block of Harvard Terrace at noon last Thursday.

A CTA bus pass and a YMCA ID card were stolen from an unsecured locker in the locker room of the YMCA between 8 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. on Saturday on the 1000 block of Grove Street.

 

Burglary

A woman saw two men standing beside her 1997 Dodge on the 400 block of South Boulevard, and she suspected them of burglary. She yelled at them at 6 p.m. on Sunday and they fled.

Someone broke out a window of a 1997 Nissan at 7:55 a.m. on Saturday on the 500 block of Custer Avenue. Unknown items were taken.

 

Vandalism

Someone shot at garage windows with a BB gun at 10:08 a.m. Saturday on the 2400 block of Colfax Street. The windows were cracked.

Four men were seen smashing the window of a 1997 Chevrolet at 5:20 p.m. on Sunday on the 1600 block of Chicago Avenue. Two of the suspects were Hispanic men, one 5-foot-7 and 160 pounds, the other 5-foot-6 and 150 pounds. The other two men could not be identified.

A male acquaintance threw a brick through the windshield of a 1994 Chevrolet at 11:45 p.m. on Friday on the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue.

The rear passenger window of a 2005 Scion was damaged between 8 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. on Friday while parked on the street on the 3300 block of Noyes Street.

Someone broke out the front passenger window of a 2003 Ford between 11 p.m. on Friday and 6:50 a.m. on Saturday on the 300 block of Custer Avenue.

A green specialized mountain bicycle was damaged after it was left out beside a house on the 2700 block of Eastwood Avenue between 9 p.m. last Thursday and 7:40 a.m. Friday.

A man ripped the cord from a cable box between 8:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Monday on the 1400 block of Sherman Avenue. The suspect is a white man about 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds.

Someone damaged a motion sensor light outside a house on the 1000 block of Dewey Avenue between 8 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday.

Graffiti was marked up in a park on the 1700 block of Sheridan Road between 7:50 a.m. on Aug. 27 and 10 a.m. on Friday.

 

Domestic Battery

A 43-year-old man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday on the 1200 block of Monroe Street. His court date is set for Tuesday.

 

Protection Order Violation

Nashawn D. Legrone, 27, of Evanston was arrested and charged with violating an order of protection at 12:25 p.m. last Thursday on the 1800 block of Lake Street. His court date is set for Sept. 14.

 

Obstruction of Justice

Jamal J. Washington, 19, was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday on the 400 block of Howard Street. His court date is set for Oct. 18.

 

Disobeying Police

Frances E. DuPont, 49, of Chicago was arrested and charged with disobeying police at 8 a.m. on Friday on the 100 block of Dempster Street. Her court date is set for Sept. 22.

 

Marijuana Possession

Fred A. Cedano, 42, of Chicago was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 2:50 p.m. on Monday on the 800 block of Sheridan Road. His court date is set for Oct. 20.

Jeffrey A. Craig II, 20, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 6:56 p.m. on Monday on the 1800 block of Lyons Street. His court date is set for Oct. 7.

Luis Gomez, 25, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 9:04 p.m. on Friday on the 2100 block of Emerson Street. His court date is set for Sept. 20.

 

Breach of Peace

James M. Kraus II, 38, of Evanston was arrested and charged with a breach of the peace at 11:11 p.m. on Sunday on the 600 block of Grove Street. His court date is set for Sept. 22.

 

Public Indecency

Nakia T. Banks, 33, of North Chicago was arrested and charged with public indecency at 12:51 a.m. last Thursday on the 900 block of Davis Street. Her court date is set for Oct. 5.

 

Driving without a License

Raymond M. Aaron, 28, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:09 p.m. on Sunday on the 2400 block of Lincoln Street. His court date is set for Sept. 27.

Angela L. Bost, 39, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5:47 p.m. on Sunday on the corner of Dodge Avenue and Emerson Street. Her court date is set for Oct. 18.

David Johnson, 43, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 11:30 p.m. on Friday on the 1900 block of Dempster Street. His court date is set for Oct. 20.

Kendra S. King, 26, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 4:58 p.m. on Friday on the 7500 block of North Sheridan Road in Rogers Park, Chicago.

Richard Montoya, 19, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 6:02 p.m. on Sunday on the 500 block of Lincoln Street. His court date is set for Sept. 27.

Beatrice Tapia, 39, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday on the 1900 block of Dempster Street. Her court date is set for Sept. 27.

Luke F. Urbanowski, 43, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:25 p.m. on Monday on the 100 block of Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for Sept. 27.

Michael A. Vernon, 43, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 1:27 a.m. on Sunday on the 1700 block of Howard Street. His court date is set for Sept. 22.

Briana A. Johnson, 20, of Skokie was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5:44 p.m. on Monday on the 500 block of South Boulevard. Her court date is set for Oct. 18.

 

Shots Fired

Gun shots were reported at 6:54 p.m. on Friday on the corner of Sherman Avenue and Madison Street.

Gun shots were reported at 12:13 a.m. on Sunday on the 1800 block of Grey Avenue.
