Police: Man Wrestles iPad Away From Knife-Wielding Robber

Evanston police arrested a 20 year-old man from Chicago who allegedly stole an iPad from a man he arranged to meet through Craigslist. The seller chased the robber and took his iPad back.

A Craigslist exchange turned violent Sunday when a 20-year-old man from Chicago allegedly ran off with an Evanston man’s iPad.

arrested Sean Thomas, of the 8100 block of Lafayette Street, and charged him with armed robbery, according to a press release from the police department. 

Thomas allegedly arranged to meet with an Evanston man who had placed an iPad for sale on Craigslist. When he arrived at 11:56 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, the two talked briefly, and the Evanston man handed over the iPad. Thomas then ran away on foot, without paying, police said.

The Evanston man ran after him and caught up to him in the 2200 block of Maple Avenue, where he attempted to take back the iPad, according to police. Thomas allegedly pulled out a knife and cut the seller several times on his body and bit him on the arm, police said. 

The Evanston man was able to take the knife away from Thomas and take back his iPad. Police caught and arrested Thomas, who was found running away nearby.

Thomas is expected to appear in court Wednesday, Aug. 29. The seller of the iPad, who is 31 years old, was treated at Northshore University HealthSystem in Evanston, police said.

The robbery is the third armed robbery to take place in Evanston over the weekend. On Saturday, , and on Sunday, at Foster Street ans Pratt Court. Police are still searching for the suspects in those incidents.
