Police Plan 4th of July Crackdown On Drunk Drivers

Evanston Police will target drunk driving and seatbelt violations as part of statewide Independence Day Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaigns.

Between this Friday and the Fourth of July, Evanston Police will be out in force targeting drunk drivers and people who aren't wearing their seatbelts.

As part of two statewide campaigns, police will focus their efforts on late night enforcement. Statistics show that a disproportionate number of crashes occur at that time of day and involve a drunk driver or someone who's not wearing a seatbelt, according to a press release from the city of Evanston.

Because of an increase in drunk driving, the Fourth of July is also one of the deadliest holidays, according to Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott.

“Too many people die behind the wheel each year due to those who choose to drive after drinking," Parrott said in the release. "Our officers will be out in full force this Fourth of July showing zero tolerance for drunk drivers.”

Evanston is one of 200 communities throughout Illinois that are participating in the enforcement campaigns. The effort is funded by the Illinois Department of Transporation using federal traffic safety dollars, according to the release.
