Twenty children from Rowe Elementary School in Chicago and one adult were taken to Evanston area hospitals with minor injuries after a school bus rear-ended another bus near Chicago Avenue and Davis Street.

The accident occurred at 11:06 a.m., as the students were on their way to a field trip at Northwestern University.

Evanston Police Public Information Officer Commander Tom Guenther said the buses were traveling together headed northbound on Chicago Avenue when traffic stopped and one of the buses also stopped. The driver of the second bus was "distracted slightly," and did not stop, rear-ending the first bus.

Guenther said preliminary reports indicated that the driver was distracted because he was looking in a side mirror, but noted that an investigation is ongoing.

No citations were given at the scene, but may be issued pending the results of the investigation, he said.

About 50 students total were on the buses, and injuries were mostly minor, including complaints of chest pain and neck and back pain.

A temporary medical assistance area was set up at the offices of Heil & Heil Insurance on Chicago Avenue, and kids milled about outside as they waited for other transportation away from the scene.

Evanston Fire Chief Greg Klaiber said two ambulances initially responded to the incident, but the alarm was later upgraded and ambulances from surrounding towns came to help transport injured students to local hospitals. Some of the responding communities included Glencoe, Glenview, Winnetka, and Niles, he said.

Chicago Avenue from Grove to Davis was closed Tuesday morning as a result of the accident.

Officials said the students who were not injured in the accident are expected to continue on the field trip.
