Suspect From Feb. Robbery Gets Sentenced to 10 Years

The robbery occurred on Feb. 16, 2011.

From the Evanston Police Department:

On June15, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Garritt Howard sentenced Danny Wicke, age 41, of Chicago, to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the Robbery that occurred on February 16, 2011 at Robby’s Communications located at 333 Howard St. in Evanston.

Back in February, Evanston Police responded to an armed robbery at Robby’s Communications in which Wicker had initially entered the store and looked around. Wicker then left the store and re-entered a short time later and with one hand in his coat pocket implied he had a gun demanding money from the store clerk. The clerk then removed currency from the cash register, giving it to Wicker.  Wicker then fled the area on foot and proceeded onto a CTA red line train southbound into Chicago from Howard St.

Evanston Police became aware of this information from a witness and subsequently stopped the CTA train at the Thorndale Ave. stop along with Chicago Police officers from the Rogers Park District and located Wicker who was a passenger on the train.  Wicker was taken into custody and positively identified by the store clerk as the robbery offender. Police located the proceeds taken from the communications store on Wicker’s person and without locating a firearm. A surveillance video from the store recorded the robbery which was later retained for evidence.

Wicker was charged by Evanston Police detectives with Aggravated Robbery, which is a designated charge used when a person commits a robbery and implies that the person is armed with a firearm even though the person does not actually possess a firearm during the commission of the crime.

At the time of the crime, Wicker was on parole and was sentenced as a Class X felony in this particular case due to Wicker’s previous criminal record as a convicted felon for robbery. Wicker has been in custody since the February 15 incident.
