Suspected "Bomb" Turns Out to Be Trash

Cook County's bomb squad investigated a suspicious-looking device on top of a sewer cap in the 1600 block of Pitner Street that turned out to be a retail security tag.

Evanston police officers, firefighters and members of Cook County's Bomb Squad investigated a suspicious looking object on Pitner Street yesterday that turned out to be a discarded store security tag.

Police were called to the 1600 block of Pitner Street around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, after a resident called to report seeing a suspicious looking device on top of a sewer cap, according to police. Officers on scene thought it looked like an incendiary device created by attaching two cell phones wrapped in foil, and secured the area.

When the Cook County Bomb Squad arrived to investigate, they determined that the suspicious device was actually a discarded retail security tag that had been wrapped in foil, according to police.
