Suspected 'Pipe Bomb' Not a Pipe Bomb

Evanston police destroy 'suspicious device.'

The Cook County bomb squad rushed to Evanston to disable an unknown device found by a dog walker Sunday night.

The Tribune reported that it was, instead, a geocache tube.  "Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which global positioning devices are put in containers and hidden around the world for participants to find," wrote the Tribune.

The device, found at Grove Street and Ridge Avenue at approximately 1:45  p.m. on Sunday, was disabled “by utilizing a destructive method,” Evanston police Cmdr. Jason Parrott told the Tribune.
