68K-Square-Foot Sports Dome Proposed for Oakton

The indoor recreation facility comes before a city commission Wednesday.

Evanston officials will consider a 68,000-square-foot indoor sports dome this week.

The proposal for the parking lot behind the GFS Food Store at 2454 Oakton Street would provide a 200-foot by 325-foot multi-purpose play surface that could be divided into different fields for soccer, lacrosse, tennis, baseball, golf and other activities, according to city documents. It would also be available for party rentals.

The city’s Site Plan and Appearance Review Committee will discuss the issue at its Wednesday meeting.

The dome will be inflated and doesn’t require a metal frame, according to an article in Evanston Now. There will be a backup generator to keep the dome elevated in case of a power failure.
