City Considers Fencing at Garage to Prevent Suicide

A 22-year-old jumped to his death from the Sherman Plaza garage last fall.

Evanston officials are considering building a chain-link fence around the rooftop parking lot at Sherman Plaza to prevent future suicides after a 22-year-old jumped to his death last year, according to an article in the Daily Northwestern.

Caleb Dayton, a former Northwestern University student, jumped from the structure in November. Since then, two other people have committed suicide by jumping from tall buildings in Evanston — one at another parking garage and another at a condo complex, the Daily Northwestern reports.

City staff are drafting a plan to install the fence at Sherman Plaza and will bring it to the City Council in July.
