City will Extend Hours to Purchase Vehicle Permits

Residents can buy the permits on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first floor of the Civic Center.

Evanston residents who have not yet purchased a vehicle permit are in luck -- the city will extend their sales hours Saturday and police will not begin enforcing violations until February.

People can buy permits on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. on the first floor of the civic center. A penalty of 50 percent of the permit fee will be added to any permits received after Monday, Jan. 10.

City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said in an e-mail that some residents have had trouble obtaining their permits. He said the process should be easier and noted the city will make some changes to the process in time for 2012.

The issues included people not receiving permits even after they have been ordered, difficulties from inaccurate vehicle information from the State of Illinois, and residents not having vehicle registration or proof of residency that fit the current guidelines.

Bobkiewicz said the current guidelines for vehicle registration and proof of residency "are not appropriate for the needs of the process to issue vehicle permits and will also be revised for the 2012 permit process."
