Early Challengers For Council Seats In 6th, 8th Wards

So far, Evanston Ald. Ann Rainey (8th Ward) and Mark Tendam (6th Ward) are the only council members whose seats are being challenged in 2013. Election filing continues until Dec. 26.

After the first day of filing for the 2013 local elections, it appears that Evanston’s current crop of local elected officials will face challengers on the city council, District 65 school board and Evanston Township High School board.

Read on to see who has filed nominating papers for election so far. Candidates have until Wednesday, Dec. 26, to file to appear on the ballot in the April 2013 election.

City of Evanston Elected Officials

All seats are up for election in the city of Evanston, and most incumbents have already filed papers to seek another term in 2013, according to city clerk Rodney Greene. That includes Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl, Ald. Judy Fiske (1st Ward), Ald. Peter Braithwaite (2nd Ward), Ald. Don Wilson (4th Ward), Ald. Delores Holmes (5th Ward), Ald. Mark Tendam (6th Ward), Ald. Jane Grover (7th Ward), Ald. Ann Rainey (8th Ward) and Ald. Coleen Burrus (9th Ward).

Two challengers had filed nominating papers as of Tuesday afternoon, according to Greene. Mark Sloane will be running for alderman in the sixth ward against incumbent Mark Tendam, while Thomas Just will be running for alderman in the eighth ward against incumbent Ann Rainey.

Sloane has run for office in the sixth ward before, in 2008, according to the Central Street Neighbors Association. He described himself then as a candidate with a business background who would focus on fiscal responsibility. Sloane chaired the Mayor's Budget Task Force Committee in 2010 and serves on the city's Lakefront Committee.

Just is a real estate broker with Apartment People, and this will be his first time running for office, he told Patch. Just said he planned to release an official platform after the first of January, and until that time, did not want to comment on any specific issues.

Anyone interested in running for office should turn in papers to City Clerk Rodney Greene at the Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Nominating papers must be received by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26.

Evanston Township Supervisor

Two challengers had filed for township supervisor as of Tuesday afternoon, according to Greene: Gary Gaspard and Keith Banks.

Anyone interested in running for township office should turn in papers to City Clerk Rodney Greene at the Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Nominating papers must be received by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26.

Evanston/Skokie School District 65

Four seats are up for election on the District 65 school board this year, as the terms of board members Andrew Pigozzi, Tracy Quattrocki, Jerome Summers and Kim Weaver expire. As of Tuesday afternoon, only Quattrocki had filed for re-election, according to the district website.

Four new candidates had filed for a seat on the school board as of Tuesday afternoon: Candace Chow, Claudia Garrison and Peter Kaplan. Chow, Garrison, Kaplan and Quattrocki all filed simultaneously at 8 a.m. the first day that nominating papers were accepted. A lottery will be held to determine whose name comes first on the ballot.

Anyone interested in filing for election in District 65 must mail or personally deliver nominating papers to Pat Markham, on the second floor of the district’s building at 1500 McDaniel Avenue in Evanston by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday, Dec. 21, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26.

Evanston Township High School District 202

Four seats are up for election on the District 202 board, according to board secretary Bill Stafford. As of Tuesday afternoon, eight candidates had submitted nominating paper, he said. Those include current board members Gretchen Livingston and Deborah Graham and challengers Casey Miller, Elena Garcia Ansani, Andrew Bezaitis, Patricia Savage-Williams, Doug Holt and Bill Geiger.

Nominating papers can be delivered to the Business Office at Evanston Township High School, 1600 Dodge Ave., during office hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays. Wednesday, Dec. 26, is the last day to file papers.
