Celebration Marks 10 Years in Levy Senior Center Facility

EVANSTON, IL - A grand celebration will mark the City of Evanston Levy Senior Center facility’s ten-year anniversary. A gala open house will be held from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Levy Center, 300 Dodge Avenue, Evanston.

The entire community is invited to the celebration, which will include light refreshments, lively music, door prizes, raffles and tours of the facility. At 1:45 pm, a few brief speeches will be delivered. Admission and parking is free. Evanston residents who need transportation to the open house should call the Levy Center at 847/448-8250.

Honorary event chairpersons are Mr. Joseph H. Levy Jr., Evanston Mayor Elizabeth B. Tisdahl, former Mayor Lorraine H. Morton, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, 8th Ward Alderman Ann Rainey, Mr. Gunnar Forrest and Ms. Joan Hickman.

The Levy Center is one of only six senior centers in Illinois which is nationally accredited. It has earned several awards for its modern facility and for its innovative recreation programs and classes for people over the age of 55.

Options include computer classes; fitness classes ranging from Tai Chi to Zumba; and classes in the arts, such as wood carving, jewelry making and piano lessons.


The Fitness Room has proven to be a very popular option, leading some members to make dramatic positive changes in their health. Several Senior Olympics basketball teams representing the Levy Center have participated in state and national games.

The Levy Center is home to the “Grandparents Raising Grandkids” support group and the City of Evanston’s Senior Services. The Levy Center is a great resource for seniors and their families who may be seeking more information about programs in the community. Senior services include a subsidized taxicab program, the handyman program, the snow shoveling program and the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, to name a few.


Every weekday, the Levy bus shuttles seniors to and from the Center at no charge and lunch is available for seniors in the community.
