Community Protest

We oppose  Veolia's request to the state Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to expand their waste transfer station at 1711 Church Street.

For years residents have complained to no avail.  Now we are getting organized and residents from all around Evanston demonstrated their support this past weekend by signing a petition to the EPA. In two days, 130 signatures were collected and were sent to officials at the EPA and local and state elected officials.  This effort is the first step in a long term campaign to get Veolia out of Evanston.

The dump -- which is situated in a residential area and just two blocks from ETHS -- causes harm to our community, is unhealthy, and does not even meet EPA guidelines on how a proper dump should function.  (The EPA recommends that a dump of this size should be located on 25 acres of land.  Veolia is located on two.)  Furthermore, just yesterday, Veolia was fined by the city for the second time in less than two months for its negligence in overseeing its operations and for creating "unwholesome and disagreeable" conditions.

Please join us and show your support for this effort at our protest.  This Saturday, August 27, we will meet at 8.45am to make signs at Mason Park on Church Street, across from the Veolia dump.  We will protest on the sidewalk from 9:00-9:30.  All are welcome, including children and pets. Come make a sign with us or bring your own.  We want to send a strong, united message to the EPA that we do not want them to allow Veolia to expand their facility in any way.  We are expecting media coverage so the more people we get, the stronger our message.

If you want to bring your own sign, here are some suggested slogans to put on your sign:

EPA say NO to Veolia!
Healthy communities NOW For Evanston!
Healthy air NOW for Evanston!
Veolia dump:  Environmental Injustice!
We deserve better!
