Evanston Fire & Life Safety Services Puts New Ladder Truck into Service

From the City of Evanston.

From the City of Evanston:

Evanston Fire and Life Safety Services proudly placed a new 2011 Aerial Tiller Ladder Truck into service today. The new aerial truck was custom built for the City of Evanston by Pierce Manufacturing in Appleton, Wisconsin. The new fire truck will replace the 1990 Pierce Tiller Ladder presently housed at Fire Station #2 at 702 Madison Street.

The new aerial ladder truck was purchased for $958,121. Evanston Fire and Life Safety Services was awarded $600,000 grant towards the purchase through the 2009 DHS/FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The balance of the funding was generously appropriated by the Evanston City Council in September of 2010.

“I thank Senator Durbin for his commitment to Federal grant funding that puts essential resources into the hands of local governments,” Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl commented. “Without his strong support, municipalities like Evanston would not be able to provide critical life saving equipment to our first responders. In the hands of Evanston’s brave and dedicated firefighters, this new aerial truck will help keep our community safe.”

“The truck is a major purchase and investment for our community that will meet our current and future life safety needs for many years to come,” said Evanston Fire Chief Greg Klaiber. “The new truck will operate out of Station 2 and will carry vital rescue equipment including ladders, extrication ventilation and forcible entry tools. The new truck will also be equipped with advanced life support paramedic equipment to serve the community.”

Evanston Fire and Life Safety Services would like to recognize the efforts of former Division Chief Ronn Gannon, Management Analyst Michael Whalen and City of Evanston Fleet Manager Lonnie Jeschke. “These three individuals applied for the grant, wrote the specifications and signed off on the inspection of the final product. Without their efforts I do not believe we would have been successful in being awarded this grant; I am very appreciative of their hard work on behalf of the citizens of Evanston," added Chief Klaiber.
