John, thanks for the wonderful information. I know that stamp collecting can be rewarding and interesting. So can coin collecting! Have you ever heard Matthew Polenzani sing?

John, one more thing. I am not a defender of Procrustes. I am trying to defeat Procrustean "thinking."

PF glad you liked the information. Was hoping to create some interest in the hobby. When it comes to commemorating people or events, coins are the grand daddy of all. Modern style stamps were not invented until the mid 1800's. Coins with the faces of emperor's and kings on them have been around for thousands of years. Unfortunately I do not believe I have heard Polezani sing. Of course WFMT did Don Giovanni last week and it was wonderful but I do not think Polezani was in the rendition I enjoyed.

PF I get it. I was wondering about foil as he used a hammer. Great handle. :)
