Evanston to Test Single Traffic Lane on Davis Street

The city is testing a new way to keep businesses, cyclists and drivers happy in the 500 block of Davis Street.

Evanston will start testing single traffic lane for a week or two in the 500 block of Davis Street starting May 13 in an effort to find a way to keep businesses, cyclists and drivers happy, Evanston Now reported.

Public Works Director Suzette Robinson says she has concerns about the new approach, such as whether there’s enough space for drivers to pull out from the diagonal parking spots but is moving ahead with the test at the urging of businesses and residents, Evanston Now reported.

Some Evanston businesses opposed a previous proposal to install a bike lane in the 500 block of Davis Street because it could eliminate 10 diagonal parking spaces.

When Patch asked readers what they think of the proposed bike lane, readers had mix reactions.

Robert Orenstein wrote, “I am in favor of more bike lanes, as well as improved bike paths throughout the city… The city will not lose revenues by losing ten parking spaces, it will lower traffic congestion, improve the quality of life for all residents, promote environmentally sound transportation alternatives, and serve the needs of a younger and growing segment of residents.”

Alan Goldberg wrote,” Getting rid of 10 parking spaces on the 500 block of Davis is a ridiculous idea. That block in particular relies on short term parking for pickups, restaurants, doctors’ visits etc. I am sick of catering to the bike riders who think they are above all the rules of the road who whiz thru stop signs and traffic signals.”

Tell us: What do you think of Evanston testing a single traffic lane in the 500 block of Davis Street? Is it a good or bad compromise for businesses, cyclists and drivers?
