Evanston’s Proposed Plastic Bag Ban Sent Back to Committee

Several residents spoke out against it.

The Evanston City Council Monday sent a proposal to ban plastic shopping bags back to committee after hearing several people from the community speak out against the idea, Evanston Now reports.

The proposal came on the heels of the City of Chicago's vote in April to ban plastic bags.

Evanston last took up the issue of plastic bags in 2011, but didn't enact any regulations due to opposition.

Speakers Monday said the bags are not a significant trash or environmental problem and that the City Council has bigger issues to focus on, according to Evanston Now.
