Mathias Challenges Sente to Public Debates

State Reps. Sid Mathias and Carol Sente agree that it's important for voters to know where they stand on key issues.

As Election Day nears, both candidates for the 59th House District say they want to give voters plenty of opportunities to learn about where they stand on key issues.

State Rep. Sid Mathias (R-Buffalo Grove) has challenged State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) to meet him at least three public debates before early voting begins Oct. 22. New political boundaries have placed the two incumbents in the same district this year.

In a Sept. 7 letter mailed to Sente, Mathias challenged his opponent to meet him for Lincoln-Douglas-style debates moderated by neutral parties.

“It is vitally important that the public be given the opportunity to compare and contrast our views on the important issues facing the great state of Illinois,” Mathias wrote. “To that end, I believe it is our duty to stand on stage together and answer questions about our positions and what we believe to be the path forward for Illinois and the communities in the 59th District.

Sente said Thursday that she had not yet received Mathias’ letter, but that she had planned to approach him next week to discuss debates. She said such plans could have been made by a casual phone call. "We know each other," she said. "I don't understand the formality of the request."

She said she particularly wants voters to understand the candidates’ different views on property taxes and state pension reform.

“I think [debates are] an important vehicle for people. We will absolutely hold some,” she said. “I think we are vastly different candidates and I think it’s important for people to know that.”

The General Election is Nov. 6. The redrawn 59th District includes parts of Buffalo Grove, Vernon Hills, Lincolnshire, Wheeling, Lake Forest, Gurnee, Green Oaks, Mundelein, Riverwoods, Indian Creek, Mettawa, Green Oaks, Waukegan and Park City.

"Please explain why Sid cannot "cannot afford to be aligned with you" if you are such a huge asset to him?" I posed a simple question, and your response is over 500 words about everything under the sun EXCEPT the simple question that I posed. Typical smoke and mirrors.

Janet- do you really think she can answer that? Let me predict the future for you... Stone will make one of the following claims after the election: If Mathias wins, it is because of all the support Stone gave him " behind the scenes". Even in spite of the fact that he turned his back on her, she still supported him because she has character and cannot be bought and continued to support him, just out of the public eye. But make no mistake, she delivered the vote for him. And she did it for free because that's what community activists who are busy with "heavy human rights issues" do. If Mathias loses, it is because he distanced himself from her, and thus all the votes she could have "delivered" to him as she has done in the past. It serves him right for turning his back on her and the many thousands of people who supported her. If there is a tie, she will cast the deciding vote in Sid's favor, just to demonstrate that she has no bad feelings for his betrayal. But her vote couldn't be bought, although she was offered thousands of dollars for it. Se stood by her convictions and couldn't be swayed. Just another community service she did for free. Didn't charge a single penny, although she could have. Just did it out of the goodness of her benevolent heart. Nope, didn't charge a penny for it. Never has, never will. So do you think predictions will bear out?
