Storify: Social Media Users React to Reduced Pot Penalties

A summary of the social media discussion regarding the recent city council action.

Social media users (and, yes, pot-heads) are celebrating today over the passage of the city council action to reduce penalties for possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana.

The measure was intended to help the city's youth find jobs, said Mayor Tisdahl at , as a criminal record for a small amount of pot was preventing some young people from getting hired.

Many Twitter users point out that the measure will not only impact the city's youth, but the city's as well.

While the reaction on social media was primarily positive, others have been speaking out against the measure. Before , some took to the citizen comment section to talk about how the measure could encourage children to try drugs.

I can't imagine how upping the amount of pot a teenager can have is going help them "secure a job" in the future and I think it is a stupid comparison. Kids who smoke that much pot, aren't interesting in working or much of anything else. 10 grams is about 15-20 joints. How about sending a message to obey the rules that are in place? From an adult point of view, we have to obey the rules that are in place whether we agree with them or not. Thats a part of life. So,I am surprised this passed. I hope it works, but I don't think it will improve these people's chances of "getting jobs in the future".

I think the "motive" for decriminalizing is questionable, However it should free up the courts to maybe actually start doing their jobs. I like the Mayors son's quote anyway.
