African-American Students Recognized For Achievements

Evanston-Skokie schools honored 38 African-American students with African-American Youth Achievement Awards.

Thirty-eight African-American students from the Evanston-Skokie public schools were honored with African-American Youth Achievement Awards, Feb. 25 at Each school nominates two students who have excelled in character, civility, community service, leadership, scholarship or sportsmanship. 

The program began in 1999 as a Black History Month initiative and the award was created for students who maintain the strong legacies of African-American leaders. The award was sponsored by First Bank and Trust, Family Focus Evanston, McGaw YMCA, Northwestern University, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP),

This year, the following students received the African-American Youth Achievement Awards: Maxandra Cadet, Aaron Potts, Alexis Kombwa, Lauren Gilbert, Jonysha Perrin, Allison Slaughter, Adam Collins, and Jonathan Denose from Evanston Township High School; Ruffin Brandon and Kaitlyn Thomas from Bessie Rhodes School; Jonathan Senecal and Michelle Foster from Chute Middle School; Isaiah Harlan-Ricketts and Brittney Henderson from Dawes School; Keira Johnson and Jonathan Wilburn from Dewey School; Keiann Williams and Tafari Dixon from Haven Middle School; Trevor Zemtseff and Alexia Harvey from King Lab School; Tiera Adams and Harrington Gibson III from Kingsley School; Jaydon Brown and Shantel Jones from Lincoln School; Drew Dawkins and Bryanna Smith from Lincolnwood School; Brittany Lynn Bishop and Larenz Brown from Nichols Middle School; Chimere Riley-Garrett and Jonathan Noel from Oakton School; Vladimir Lauture and Alliyah Rumboldt-Lemond from Orrington School; Shamir Cullens and Brianna Charles from Walker School; Isaac Diop and Tianna Henry from Washington School; Braden Adamson-Tate and Tiara Jackson from Willard School.
