ETHS Girls Track and Field Wins Conference Meet

The team beat out New Trier and Niles West for the championship.

The Evanston Township High School girls’ track and field team won the Central Suburban League South Girls Conference Meet Saturday, scoring big in several hurdles, sprinting and relay events, according to ESPN’s DyeStat high school track website.

The ETHS team finished with 139 total points, beating out New Trier (114.5 points), Niles West (112 points) and three other high schools behind strong performances by senior Margaret Bamgbose, sophomore Parker English and sophomore Shahara Mitchell.

Bamgbose singlehandedly brought the team 30 points, with first place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash. Her winning 300-hurdles time of 44.04 seconds beat the second place finisher by over five seconds. Bamgbose has already claimed the fastest high school girls’ 300-meter hurdles time of any Illinois runner and the 14th best in the nation when she clocked in at 42.35 seconds during an April 21 meet held in Kansas.

Not to be outshone, English contributed 28 points to the win, taking first place in the 400-meter dash and long jump, and second in the 200-meter dash.

Mitchell scored 14 points with a second place finish in the shot put and third place in the discus throw.

The ETHS girls’ team also dominated the meet’s relay events, finishing first in 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays, second in the 4x200-meter relay and third in the 4x800-meter relay.

Next up, the girl’s team will compete Thursday at Niles West High School in their IHSA Sectional meet, in which individual competitors and relay teams attempt to qualify for the state championship meet.

The ETHS athletic department did not return calls for comment at the time of publication.
