ETHS Wrestler Featured in 'Sports Illustrated'

Freshmen and sophomores star in the high school production of 'Alice in Wonderland' May 3 and 4, 'Sports Illustrated' profiles senior wrestler Tiaira Scott and more news from Evanston Township High School.

ETHS wrestler Tiaira Scott featured in Sports Illustrated

Tiaira Scott, a member of the Evanston Township High School wrestling team, is featured in the April 22 issue of Sports Illustrated. The publication’s "Faces in the Crowd" section highlights outstanding student athletes from around the country.

Scott won her first national championship at the USAW Girls Folkstyle National Championships held in Oklahoma City in March 2013. Scott scored four wins in a total time of 5:58, with two wins over two opponents from Texas and two from California. She is moving on to freestyle competitions this spring and summer in an attempt to dominate both styles.

Evanston Township High School presents Lewis Carroll’s beloved tale “Alice in Wonderland” on May 3 and 4 in the school’s Little Theatre. A cast of ETHS freshmen and sophomores, directed by Anne Lefkovitz, will become the unforgettable residents of Wonderland when Alice falls down the rabbit hole.

Join Alice's madcap adventures with Rabbit, Caterpillar, Mad Hatter and March Hare, grinning Cheshire Cat, Queen of Hearts, Playing Card Soldiers, and other familiar characters. 

Show times are 4:00pm on May 3 and 7:00pm on May 4. Tickets at the door are $5 for adults, $3 for children, students and senior citizens. Contact the Fine Arts office at 847-424-7130 for more information.  

ETHS is located at 1600 Dodge Ave., and parking is available in front and at the rear of the school. The Little Theatre is wheelchair accessible. 

Kiwanis Club honors two Evanston High School staff members 

The Kiwanis Club of Evanston honored two Evanston Township High School (ETHS) staff members with the Hixson Award for their outstanding service to the community in which they live or work. Mary Collins, ETHS Community Service Coordinator, and David Chan, ETHS Technology Information Specialist, received recognition on April 16, 2013 for their special efforts.   

Collins has worked with the Kiwanis Club on the Earth Day celebration, as well as several other projects that have given the students an opportunity to work with adults in the community as mentors and role models. Chan worked on the design of the Kiwanis Funville project which has encouraged students to find new ways to improve living in Evanston with an emphasis on fun. He also helped with the Faces of Evanston project.

The award is named in honor of the first Kiwanis International president George F. Hixson. The club contributes $1,000 to Kiwanis International for each Hixson given. The funds are directed to the worldwide Eliminate project which is working to eliminate neo-natal tetanus in infants.

Collins  and Chan join Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl,  Northwestern University president Morton Schapiro, former mayors Lorraine Morton and Jay Lytle, as well as other community leaders as Hixson winners.

Evanstonian newspaper and student staff earn recognition

The Evanstonian, Evanston Township High School’s student-produced newspaper, earned a silver certificate from the Northern Illinois School Press Association (NISPA). Winners of the annual newspaper contest were announced in April 2013 to recognize student journalists and advisers.

Blue ribbon awards were also awarded to students in the following categories:

  • Editorial writing - Jessica BaumYoni Hirsch and Ellen Schneider
  • Graphics - Paul Grosrenaud
  • Editorial cartoons - Rena Newman

Honorable mention recognition included the following:

  • In-depth writing - Grace Buszko-ClarkAbby Mark and Mamie Tabet
  • Feature writing - Lucy Brennan
  • Photography- Abby Baum
  • News writing – Yoni Hirsch
