Word Play: The Pleasures of Writing Fearlessly

Writing is work, right? Yes, but it’s also play. And that’s what makes the process of writing so satisfying.

This course is designed for writers of all genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and hybrid forms. During our class “play” time, we’ll try out different tricks and techniques that poets use to add music, texture, and meaning to their writing. As inspiration, we’ll review contemporary writing that uses surprising language and imagery without seeming contrived. But we’ll spend the most time on exercises and free writing to generate fresh phrases and promising starts—while silencing the “inner editors” that prevent us from taking risks. Participants will also learn a process to help them play with words on their own.

StoryStudio classes are limited to 15 participants or fewer. This intimate setting allows for greater interaction and personal attention.
