Under a proposed law passed by legislators today, Illinois children would have to start school at age 6 instead of age 7, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Illinois is currently one of 16 states in the union where students don’t need to be in school until age 7. Two states don't require students to be in school until age 8. Age 6 is the law in 26 states and age 5 is the starting age in eight others, the newspaper reports.

Governor Pat Quinn now needs to sign the legislation to make it legal.
