There are so many terms in the health and medical world that are misinterpreted or misunderstood; I am here to clarify some of these differences.
For starters, the "term Home Care actually describes two very different types of care: Home health care provided by licensed medical professionals, in which you need a prescription. The other being Non-medical home care, such as personal care, homemaker or companionship services provided by professional caregivers" (Caregiverstress.com). Home Instead Senior Care would be considered non-medical home care.
Home Instead Senior care provides caregivers and companions for seniors in their home, wherever home may be. These non-medical caregiving tasks consist of a wide range of assistance or supervision for the senior or seniors in their home. In broader terms, it helps the senior with their ADL's or activities of daily living. ADL's consist of assistance or supervision of eating, dressing, bathing, toileting, and transferring. Non-medical Home Care helps keep seniors in their home and helps their families provide peace of mind knowing someone is checking in.
As mentioned, home health care consists of licensed professionals. These professionals consist of physical, speech and occupational therapists, CNA's, and registered nurses. They provide medical and therapeutic services, but can work hand in hand with non-medical home care as well.
Why does this relationship between home health and non-medical home care work? Well for starters, a senior is receiving their medical care from their home health professional, while also receiving as much assistance as they need from their non-medical home care caregiver. It's a great team to provide the family peace of mind and to keep the senior at home, how could anyone go wrong?
