Evanston Review: "Evanston flourishing: City added 72 new businesses in 2013."

Evanston Review article from 2/19.

72 business opening, 210 jobs and lowered unemployment sounds newsworthy to me. At the very least, economic news almost always is.  This was covered as a top news item by other publications in our town.  Meanwhile, there was only a buried article that I could see on Evanston Patch (twentieth item down when I finally saw it. Now, I cannot find it at all, even with search engine. I call that no story.)

Why was it not touted on the daily emailed news? Why is it that Patch can write multiple articles on a smallish clothing store closing, yet not tout some good universal economic news for us like 73 businesses opening?

Patch is certainly quick to cover even petty crime or negative stories ad nausem -- up to 5 an 6 times in email alerts/blasts/repetitive articles, yet not give us good economic news or other positive stories.  There are a lot of interesting and innovative things going on in this city, but from reading Patch, you would only know of crime.  I am not saying there are not issues or crime (of course there are!) but that does not tell our complete story.  Good thing the other pubs around here actually do try to share all the news and reflect what life is really like here.

I have also noticed some strangle editorializing when there is good news.  For example, in today's article Evanston's January Home Sales Up Slightly (why add slightly when the figure was 17%?) And why not mention a $4 million home was sold in January in the article about January sales?  When Evanston was voted one of top exciting suburbs, instead of just reporting the fun news straight for our own town, Patch chose the angle of --hmm. really? What other burbs were snubbed?

I could go on and on...

Do we have to go elsewhere to get the full picture and some legitimate good news for our community?  Come on Patch. We deserve better.
