New Home for Taco Diablo, Lulu’s Seems Likely

Taco Diablo was destroyed in a December fire and Lulu's closed in January after two decades in Evanston.

The owner of Taco Diablo, which was destroyed in a fire in December, and Lulu’s, which shuttered its doors in January after 20 years, is planning to construct a new Davis Street building to house the latest incarnation of the two restaurants under one roof.

Daniel Kelch wants to build a two-story building at 1026 Davis St. in the space being vacated by Tom Thumb.

The building would house both restaurants, which would share a kitchen, according to city documents. The building would have retail space as well.

The developers have asked the city for a zoning variation allowing them not to have designated parking spaces. Last night, the City Council approved the request for introduction, according to Evanston Now, which indicates that it will likely get final approval at the July 28 meeting.
