Northwestern Baseball Player Nets National Honor for His Inspiring Story

Glenview native Cody Stevens, who survived a life-threatening blood clot after being hit in the head by a fastball in 2012, was recently awarded the Tom Walker College Baseball Inspiration Award.

Northwestern baseball player Cody Stevens, of Glenview, has the distinction of being one of only seven members of the college baseball community to receive the 2013 Tom Walter College Baseball Inspiration Award from CollegeBaseballInsider.com.

Stevens, the son of Northwestern head coach Paul Stevens, was playing summer baseball for the Chillicothe Paints of the Prospect League when he was struck in the head by a fastball in a game in West Virginia, according to nusports.com. The trauma caused a life-threatening blood clot that required emergency surgery.

After getting hit by the ball, Stevens, who was initially diagnosed with a concussion, returned to the dugout to watch the rest of the game. Fifteen minutes into the bus ride home, he realized something was very wrong, according to a story in the Chillicothe Gazette.

Stevens, a graduate of Glenbrook South High School, redshirted the season so he could fully recover. This summer, he returned to playing summer ball for the Chillicothe Paints.
