Patch's Football Rankings - Week 7

Evanston remained at No. 7 with a crushing win against Waukegan.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s best football teams.

Not a lot of change in our rankings as most of the top teams took care of business. Loyola Academy’s win over Mount Carmel was a good start to its tough run of in-conference games. Glenbrook South surprised some people with a win over New Trier while Deerfield continued to roll behind the strong play of Brad Holway. All the Central Suburban League teams play on Thursday this week with crucial games coming for Highland Park at Niles North and New Trier going on the road to Niles West.

WEEK 7 RANKINGS

1.  (1) – Maine South took care of business against Niles West, getting its starters some work and some rest in a 55-15 victory.  The Hawks did allow a kickoff return for a touchdown though, and special teams play will be something to monitor as we get in the playoffs.

2. Loyola Academy (2) – Other than a long touchdown run in the first quarter, Loyola’s defense didn’t allow much of anything in its 12-7 win over Mount Carmel.  Malcolm Weaver and the offense did just enough and the Ramblers proved they can win the more defensive games that often come in the playoffs.

3. (3) – North Shore clinched a playoff spot with another blowout victory, this time winning 53-7 against Christian Liberty. The Raiders have three home games left and they are looking to secure a home playoff game for the first time in more than a decade.

4.  (5) – Kevin Schroeder had another big game for the Titans, rushing for 143 yards in Glenbrook South’s 21-10 win over New Trier.  It’ll be a short week before Glenbrook South travels to Waukegan on Thursday in search of its fifth straight win.

5.  (6) – The Warriors got back to .500 with a big win against Maine West, 49-7. This team looks completely different with Brad Holway back as Deerfield has won three straight games. They certainly look like the favorite in the CSL North.

6. (4) – The Trevians had a chance to make a statement on Friday night, but couldn’t come through against Glenbrook South. New Trier will probably earn a playoff spot even if it finishes 5-4, but to ensure a better seed the Trevians need to win out.

7.  (7) – Evanston was cooking in the second half, scoring 27 points after halftime in a 41-6 win over Waukegan.  The Wildkits got some excellent special teams play from punter Alex Vergara who placed two punts inside Waukegan’s five-yard line.

8.  (9) – QB Curt Petty made a couple key throws in Glenbrook North’s 20-6 win over Niles North. The defense played well in stopping Niles North’s running attack and the Spartans host Maine West on Thursday in another must-have game.

9.  (8) – Andrew Sledd had another big game for . The defense will have to play better when the Giants play Niles North this Thursday in another conference game.

10. (10) – After getting out to a quick 6-0 lead, it was all downhill for the Vikings in a 20-6 loss to Glenbrook North. At 2-4, the Vikings will now have to win out in order to have a chance at making the playoffs, a tough task with first-year QB Tony Granato running the offense.

11.  (11) – Niles West hung with three-time defending state champion Maine South for a quarter, but were eventually overmatched in a 55-15 loss. Jeremiah Jordan was a big positive for the Wolves, returning a kickoff for a touchdown and catching a 76-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

12. (12) – Quarterback Jake Korbecki scored the Warriors’ only touchdown in another tough loss, 49-7 to Deerfield.  Interim coach Russ Swenson filled in for Chris Hare, who missed the game due to his second back surgery in six months.
