Coast Guard Responds to Report of Struggling Swimmer in Evanston

Evanston Police, the Evanston Fire Department's dive team and U.S. Coast Guard members searched Lee Street Beach after a beach-goer called 911, believing a swimmer might be in trouble.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the dive team searched the water off Thursday evening after a woman reported that she had seen a swimmer struggling, then lost sight of him.

Along with , the Coast Guard and dive team swept the water and the surrounding area after the woman called 911 around 8 p.m., according to Evanston city manager Wally Bobkiewicz.

Rescue workers could not find anyone in the lake, but the Coast Guard reported that they saw a man leave the water north of the beach, Bobkiewicz said.

One Patch reader reported seeing a helicopter with a searchlight tracing the lakefront near Lee Street Beach, between Main Street and South Boulevard. The search was called off sometime around 9 p.m.
