MLK Day Event to Feature Talented Evanston Youth and Community Leaders
DEWU is a FREE community event held on MLK Day. Featuring: original rap songs, choreography, dramatic performances and speeches by Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Superintendent Eric Witherspoon.
Evanston – Youth Organizations Umbrella (Y.O.U.) is pleased to announce the sixth annual Diverse Evanston Walks United (DEWU). DEWU is an annual community-wide celebration of peace, diversity, unity, leadership, and service that is held on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. This youth-driven event engages young people from across Evanston in performances and speeches that promote non-violence and making Evanston a safer place.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on January 16, 2012, at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Nichols Concert Hall at 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston.
This year’s event will feature original rap songs, choreography, and dramatic performances created by youth, as well as brief speeches by Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Superintendent Eric Witherspoon. The event is co-sponsored by Y.O.U., the YWCA Evanston/North Shore, and the McGaw YMCA. The event is free and open to the public. RSVPs are recommended (but not required) at www.youevanston.org.
