What about being out in force to stop muggings? One mugging on Florence Avenue 4-20-2014, at 11:20Read More a.m., plain daylight. Another mugging on Benson Avenue 4-21-2014 at 3 p.m., plain daylight. Preventing muggings seems more important than catching motorists using their phones or whatever. Where are our priorities? And when citizens are mugged, where is the police? Giving traffic tickets? Patch does not report crime anymore. All is well in Evanston, folks.
jim April 22, 2014 at 09:44 pm
@Tantor the muggers are taking that day off. This is better revenue getting. Easier income.
Lonson Williams April 23, 2014 at 12:01 am
Tantor is a fool. Distracted driving is one of the biggest public safety issues in the country.Read More Idiots driving around in a three ton hunk of steel without paying attention to what they are doing are effectively offensively weaponizing their vehicles and targeting innocent people. The rate nationally for injuries related to distracted driving is much higher than robberies. The number of people who drive distractedly far outnumbers robbers. We have seen several instances of weaponizing vehicles in the last few weeks in Evanston. There was the woman who went on a hit and run terror spree nearly killing a cyclist just a couple of years ago. Lets hope the EPD busts a bunch of potential pursuers of reckless homocide before they kill people.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
dwayne roberson April 23, 2014 at 06:02 am
Affirmative Action was the Planners foolhardy attempt to fix racism with racism. It is indicative ofRead More a pay back attitude apparent in Holder and Obama. This does not advance the actual state of equality. It does perpetuate the bitterness that the race industry and Democrat party rely on for power. A return to colorblind meritocracy is all that can really be fair and equal.
Maria Young April 23, 2014 at 07:25 am
Its about time. Now do the same in other states and in the state workforce too. Cleanup upRead More America, grow the economy? Thats a start, anyone running a business knows this. These people must change their culture, thats why they have so many failures and I am tired of hearing the same spin for 30 years.
Steven Serebrenik April 23, 2014 at 08:05 am
I believe that affirmative action had it's place in history. It helped a lot of black people butRead More adversely affected a lot of white people who could not get student loans and jobs....It seemed at the time that after all that had been done to black people, this was the way to go. I'm speaking of the 60's. This is 50 years later. Black people have progressed. In my mind, white people have been redeemed by now. Otherwise, when does it end. It's like a tax...NEVER. HOW FAIR IS THAT?
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Steven Lee April 23, 2014 at 08:06 am
I've been doing a lot of digging into Common Core. There are a couple of videos out there worthRead More watching to get yourself up to speed on the forces working to stop CC. This is a documentary by Home School Legal Defense Association: http://www.commoncoremovie.com/ This was a video of a forum on CCSS in Medway last month https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EvELBeCqnk&app=desktop Keep in mind that MCAS, while not perfect, pulled MA to be the top-ranked school system in the country, and ranked 5th in the world in math and science. Mitchell Chester and Deval Patrick accepted $250 million in RttT money to dump MCAS and accept Common Core. The PARCC test is being piloted as a "potential" replacement to MCAS testing. MA Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester is Chair of the PARCC Governing Board, as well as a member of the Council of Chief State School Officers (one of the two orgs that created Common Core). Another lobbying group pushing Common Core is Achieve, Inc. of which Governor Patrick sits on the Board of Directors. This is a fun read on Chester's obvious conflict of interest: http://edushyster.com/?p=4678 If you start scratching the surface of the money and influence behind Common Core and your BS meter doesn't start ticking off the chart then your BS meter is broken. Have a look at just a handful of the connections here: http://www.commoncoreforum.net/wolves-and-sheep/ Or have a look at this chart: http://www.markgarrison.net/archives/2098 Education is the responsibility of the states, under the watchful eye of parents and local school committees. A federal oligarchy has no business pushing a profit-driven curriculum.
CowDung April 23, 2014 at 08:18 am
"School boards dont actually read the textbooks they order, unless there are complaints, andRead More honestly, I didnt notice either until the CC thing came up. Then I said "What the hell is this?" " ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: That is one good thing that is coming from all the propagandists fighting against the Common Core Standards--it seems that most are actually looking at their kid's textbooks for the first time. They wrongly blame school curriculum choices on Common Core, but at least they are starting to pay attention to what their kids are doing in school.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 08:27 am
Oh, this just in. Product placement on the PARCC exam. "A busboy spills a MUG rootbeer. Mug isRead More a trademark of the Pepsi Cola company...." and a story about perseverance, as encapsulated in the Nike Slogan, Just do it, copyright Nike , Inc. No wonder there is a gag order about the contents of the exam. They don't want parents to know. Does that NOT frighten you? Or at least piss you off? Remeber learning in school about subliminal advertising, how movie thewatres used to flash "drink Coca-Cola" every few frames, so fast it was not picked up consciously by movie-goers, but succeeded in increasing concession sales? Who exactly is regulating the content of the tests? There should be NO marketing to children in schools. Like I said, the idea of national standards sounds so reasonable, but they way this has been implemented, and the HUGE amounts of money poured in ALL by companies that stand to profit from a "market" for and of EVERY schoolchild in America, makes this "product", CC and all it's related materials, tainted. Suspect. And you think you can send your child to private school? Most have to adopt CC, because the architect of the CC, David Coleman, is now the President of the College Board, and will be designing the SAT's to reflect whatever the hell he decided already should be the qualifications for college readiness. Do you see the levels of conflict of interest here? Oh, and Home-schooling. Pearson publishing has spent the last couple of years quietly accumulating a portfolio of on-line home school providers. Good luck figuring out which ones.

The link below provides answers about presidential libraries and their funding:Read More http://www.archives.gov/presidential-libraries/faqs/#8 Of particular note: How is a Presidential Library paid for and funded? A Presidential Library is constructed with private or non-Federal funds donated to non-profit organizations established usually for the express purpose of building a Presidential Library and supporting its programs. Some libraries have also received construction and development funding from state and/or local governments. The library is then transferred to the Federal government and operated and maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) through its congressionally appropriated operating budget. Some staff and programs at Presidential libraries are paid for with funds from associated private foundations organized to fund the construction of the library and provide continuing support for library programs and special events, such as conferences and exhibitions. It turns out local taxpayers have provided support in the past. Not to say that we should with this one. Also, once opened, they are administered by the federal government with federal employees. So, in fact, we are paying for all of them in some way.

Bravo to you Jay Jay for doing credible research and downloading these "facts" from theRead More internet. Of course you know that if its on the internet it must be true.
Grumpy Old Man April 23, 2014 at 08:24 am
@Stones - I actually agree with you. My problem is simply the economic conditions presentlyRead More affecting Illinois, the lack of any credible solution and the nature of the Chicago and Cook County governments which can't seem to keep crooks out of office. I think Presidential libraries serve valuable purposes (and that doesn't matter which President it happens to be) can provide economic benefits to the area in which the library is location (whether short/long term is another question which I am not in a position to answer).

Funny how Netflix is the "bad boy" yet those that offer more commercials than the movieRead More itself are just fine :) Cable today is pure garbage, a 2 hr movie will last half the night with all those commercials and since all sports from all countries, could be seen live over the internet...cable is obsolete. Netflix is weak but is a fine alternative to cable for now. (as for news, please, you must be brain-dead to get your news from cable...with all of them all over you from second you start the computer to turn on the radio to even the second you "check" the e-mail on the phone. so Reuters don't worry about Netflix, worry about cable companies whose stocks should be worth a little more than half an ounce of dirt
Michael Brennick April 22, 2014 at 05:46 pm
Where are the stories about the rates charged by the Cable cartels-???---Especially Leftist,Read More Democratic Comcast, the premier robber barons, who fill the campaign tills of the Dumocrats.

Netflix is hands down the best deal going, and it has been a bargain for YEARS. I guess theRead More nonsensical whiners who complain about a long-delayed, $2 a MONTH increase are worried it will cost them a (partial) SINGLE LATTE. Utterly ridiculous.

I don't believe this kid is competent enough to make those decisions. Those kids need to beRead More prosecuted to the fullest and if the does judge does not agree he needs to step down.

When someone like Seer starts spewing it causes me to wonder if he's just some ignorant kid tryingRead More to get reactions out of adults or if he's just stupid. After going through some of the 12 other comments he's put on other articles in the last 24 hours it is apparent it is both. I apologize to everyone else for provoking even one more comment out of that imbecile. That said, there is no question that there have been abuses in the pension systems (especially the teacher one with the huge end of career bumps) but I still think it is unfair to blame the rank and file people in that system for what is wrong with the financial status of this state. It goes SO much deeper than that. You can be against pensions and want to eliminate them or whatever you want but take away the biggest incentive for going into professions like those where you make less money than similarly educated private sector employees and you are going to have a major shortage (especially of teachers) much more quickly than you think. Be careful what you wish for.
Walt Hines April 22, 2014 at 10:43 pm
@ George, I would love to hear what state your moving to. I'm just tired of the same old crap thatRead More will continue no matter who gets in. I'm in Oswego and the school district is $800 million in the hole. They've spent like a bunch of drunken sailors with not much to show for it. My taxes are more than my PMI each month. We're having to give our homes away just to move.........This ? goes out to anyone. Has Rauner said anything about not collecting a pension from the state if he wins Governor? I've heard nothing and to me that's part of the problem, please share if you know differently. God help us all!!!

About that library-think it will be filled with graffiti and out of control theft by a certainRead More segment of the gangbangers, flashmob, driveby shooter, grammar school dropout, gun-toting druggie type?
Grumpy Old Man April 22, 2014 at 07:10 am
@Greg Smith - LOL. More nonsense from the Rush crowd. Millions of blacks who are just asRead More disadvantaged as your scumbag gang banger buddies don't drive around shooting up their neighborhoods. You are also, clearly a racist. There are millions of white Americans who aren't born into money and who are unemployed. You should be thankful that we still have a war on drugs. Legalize drugs remove your profits and all of your homies are going to be unemployed and no Ford Foundations to give you grants.
Grumpy Old Man April 22, 2014 at 07:25 am
I should have said no Ford Foundation grants. There will always be foundations giving out grants.Read More Hopefully they won't do as the Ford Foundation did and give a grant to Jeff Ford and his gang.
Edward Andrysiak April 22, 2014 at 01:09 pm
Well, here comes more get rid of the guns talk. You seldom hear why the gangs are at war. The reasonRead More is market share. It's about money. That is how they support themselves. So, let's concentrate on removing what the fight over...drug sales, prostitution and the like. Rid the neighborhoods of that and there will be less to fight over. Squeeeeeze their profits down to zero and there will be less violence!

Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I have to take off my flippin' shoes and get patted down, but apparently you can just walk up and plant a bomb in the wheel well.
april ann April 22, 2014 at 12:30 pm
I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Thank you lucky stars kid!

Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't. It's like, "what did YOU do to help these people?" Same as you - nothing.
