Blake Ross, 20, was murdered on the south side of Chicago on May 12 in what police believe was a gang-related shooting. His cousin, LaN'eca Ross, remembers his sunny personality and love for younger cousins.
The last time LaN'eca Ross saw her cousin Blake Ross, he was standing outside the Fleetwood-Jourdain Center in Evanston on Tuesday, May 7, with a couple of friends. That’s the same day someone fired a gun near the playground at the community center on Foster Street, in what police believe was a gang-related shooting targeted at the 20-year-old Evanston man. Five days later, police found Blake’s body on the far south side of Chicago, near Rainbow Beach Park, where he died of multiple gunshot wounds. Longtime Pioneer Press reporter Nick Katz has passed away, the Morton Grove Champion reports. Katz covered the towns of Deerfield, Park Ridge, Lincolnwood Skokie and Northbrook, as well as Morton Grove, according to the Pioneer Press. At Monday's Morton Grove village board meeting, outgoing Mayor Dan Staackmann heralded Katz, calling him a dedicated journalist. "I sincerely appreciate what he did for journalism," Staackmann said. "People of this caliber, for what they get paid for what they're expected to do, it's just not there like it used to be." Katz had been with the newspaper since 1982, and most recently covered the village of Morton Grove. He died in his sleep at his Evanston home last week. There will be no funeral services or …

Keith Woods offered a warm welcome, friendly conversation and good advice for nearly 30 years at the Evanston hot dog shop Mustard's Last Stand. He died Sunday at age 51, after a long illness.
Walk in the door at Mustard’s Last Stand, and Keith Woods could probably identify your order before you could open your mouth—even if you hadn’t been there in two years. “He’d be like, ‘You got a jumbo dog.’” “You’d be like, ‘You got it right, Keith,’” says Lonnie Starkman, co-owner of Mustard’s. Woods, a 6'2" former U.S. Marine who worked at Mustard’s Last Stand for nearly 30 years, died early Sunday morning from complications of several illnesses. Iton, 51, had battled leukemia for 11 years, unbeknownst to his Northwestern colleagues. Leon A. Carrow, M.D., a distinguished member of the medical faculty of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, died April 10, 2013 at his home in Evanston, IL. Dr. Carrow was 89 years old. Dr. Carrow was Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University until his retirement from both private practice and teaching responsibilities in 1991. He also served as a consultant to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago from 1955 to 1991. Dr. Carrow was perhaps best known for his strong management and analytical skills, which he brought to bear on the governance of various aspects of Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
