Three Evanston Businesses Failed Tobacco Compliance Check

The businesses sold cigaretts to minors during Evanston police’s tobacco compliance check.

  Three Evanston businesses recently made unlawful sales to minors without asking for age verification during tobacco compliance checks conducted by Evanston Police Department’s Juvenile Bureau, according to a press release.  The businesses were issued city ordinance violations for selling products to a minor under 18 and have a mandatory administrative hearing on March 19. The three businesses were: Evanston police conducted the checks at 40 businesses by sending an underage teen into the establishment to try and buy cigarettes while under police surveillance. One business was closed during the compliance checks and the other 36 businesses passed.

7-Eleven Employee Robbed at Gunpoint

About $1,600 worth of Newport cigarettes and $800 in cash was stolen from a 7-Eleven in Skokie on Sept. 2.

A 7-Eleven employee was robbed at gunpoint in Skokie on Sept. 2 around 7:20 p.m. According to police, two men entered the store at 3441 Church St. and approached the front counter. One of the suspects then leaned over and pointed a black and silver semi-automatic pistol at the clerk. “Open the drawer and give me all of your money,” the suspect told the employee, according to the report. “And cigarettes, too. And open the safe.” About $800 was taken from the cash register and 160 packs of Newport cigarettes were removed from behind the counter. Armed Robbery Suspect Used Credit Card at 7-Eleven

Evanston police released a surveillance camera photo of one of the suspects in an armed robbery of three Northwestern University students. Records show he used one of the victims' credit cards.

Evanston police have a lead on one of the suspects in the armed robbery of three Northwestern University students that happened early Sunday morning. Records show that one of the credit cards stolen in the robbery was used at a 7-Eleven at 3441 Church Street in Skokie at 1:35 a.m. Sunday, just 25 minutes after the robbery took place, according to a press release from the Evanston Police Department.  The store's surveillance video shows two men exiting a light-colored car and entering the store. One of the men, wearing dreadlocks or braids, approached the register and paid for his purchase with the credit card, police said. The men then took off in their car. All of our region's gas is overpriced! You can fill up in Kenosha Wisconsin for about $3.35 and Racine for about $3.31 per gallon. Not to mention southern Illinois with even cheaper gas. All this explanation about expensive special formulas doesn't wash with me. Taxes are way too high, but don't account for these differences. We are geting ripped off.   more ›
