Funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and NorthShore University Health System, the Erie Family Health Center will serve Evanston and Skokie residents.
Local officials, including Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl and Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen, held a ribbon cutting for a new community health center in Evanston Monday. Operating temporarily out of the Lorraine Morton Civic Center at 2100 Ridge Ave., Erie Family Health Center Evanston/Skokie is one of 219 community health centers funded under President Obama’s Affordable Care Act this year. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will provide a $650,000 annual operating grant, while NorthShore University HealthSystem has committed $600,000 in operating support over the next three years and $1.2 million toward opening a permanent location, according to a press release from Erie. Congresswoman likes the law as it is while Dold thinks change is necessary.

Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) criticized what she called the 33rd effort of the House Republican majority to repeal all or part of the Affordable Care Act after today’s vote to eliminate the law. She thinks the time should be devoted to job creation. “Though Republicans took control of the House with the promise that they will focus on jobs, they have wasted more than 43 hours of floor time on legislation to repeal Obamacare,” Schakowsky said. Give the Affordable Care Act (ACA) a chance. That was the opinion of a majority of readers who responded to an unscientific Patch poll asking whether President Barack Obama’s health care legislation should be given time to season, be repealed or changed. Of the 637 people who took the poll, 370 want to leave the new law recently upheld by the United States Supreme Court alone to see how it works, 198 want it repealed and 69 want to repeal objectionable parts and keep the rest. With the help of a $650,000 yearly grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a new health center will serve Evanston’s low-income, underinsured or uninsured populations.
City officials promise that a new, federally funded community health center will bring affordable services to the Evanston area without drawing on local tax dollars.
