Bank of America Closing Downtown, New Mexican Sandwich Shop Opening

Lots of activity downtown, where Bank of America is closing its branch, a new Mexican sandwich shop has opened and Starbucks is considering an expansion. Read on for more business openings and closings.

Bank of America Closing Sherman Avenue Branch Bank of America announced on its website that the company is shutting its banking branch at 1705 Sherman Ave. on Feb. 8. The branch at 1336 Chicago Ave. will remain open, according to the bank’s website. Sherman Avenue Starbucks May Expand The tiny Starbucks at 1726B Sherman Ave. downtown could be expanding to a larger storefront, the Daily Northwestern reports. On Tuesday, members of the zoning board of appeals moved to recommend Starbucks’ application for a special use permit to construct a bigger location just a few doors down, in the vacant storefront at 1734 Sherman Ave, according to the Daily. The application just needs approval from the city council to go forward, the Daily reports. …

Bank of America Buys Evanston Plaza

The plaza was sold for $12,350,000.

Bank of America bought the troubled Evanston Plaza for $12,350,000 at a foreclosure auction Tuesday. City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said in an e-mail that the city will now work with Bank of America "as it weighs its development options and potential partners for future development." In May, the Chicago-based Evanston Plaza owner, Joseph Freed & Associates LLC, surrendered the property to a court-appointed receiver as part of a $105 million foreclosure lawsuit with Bank of America Corp., after Freed used Evanston Plaza as cross-collateral to help finance the now-failed Block 37 project in downtown Chicago. The plaza has been plagued by numerous empty storefronts. A.J. Wright, one of the larger stores in the plaza, closed earlier this year, …
