Peace Vigil: Night of Prayer, Call for Action

Violence in Evanston brings religious, political and education leaders together at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church to worship, sing and, seek solutions.

Standing before a warm, supportive crowd at the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Tyra Davis spoke briefly but passionately about the death of her brother in a recent shooting. Her brother, 23-year-old Evanston Marcus Davis of Evanston, was shot last month while in his car at Smitty's Garage. Reflecting on her loss, Davis said her mood recently changed from heartbroken to angry. "My brother lost his life for nothing, he didn't have a chance to run away or defend himself," Davis said, crying. "I will never be the same without my brother." Davis' testimony was one of many Monday evening, when people from Evanston joined together to discuss the recent violence in the city and call for solutions. The event, billed as a peace vigil to "…
