The New York Times has 20 lists of best sellers ranging from nonfiction, fiction, hard cover fiction, e-book fiction, e-book nonfiction--even Manga, Japanese comic books. But nothing gives the pulse of America like Amazon’s top selling list of 2012. This year is the year of erotic literature, according to Amazon’s list. Evanston Patch readers voted School for Little Children, 1427 Chicago Ave., as the best preschool in Evanston in this week’s installment of our Reader’s Choice series. Rankings were determined based on a combination of total votes and reviews in our business directory, and though St. Joan of Arc Church had the highest percentage of the votes (31 percent), School for Little Children won the Reader’s Choice with both strong poll numbers (27 percent) and several glowing reviews. St. Joan of Arc Church did secure a second place finish, however, and Puerta Abierta Preschool took third place. All three preschools received public acclaim. Readers voted the Celtic Knot as the best place in Evanston to celebrate St. Patrick's day in this week's installment of our Readers' Choice series. Celtic Knot got 40 percent of the vote, beating out Tommy Nevin's and Koi, which tied for second place with 24 percent each. Reader Ron Mills added his support of Celtic Knot in the story's comment section: "Are not the window seats at the Celtic Knot the best seats in town to enjoy a few pints and grub?" Patch readers felt strongly about their favorite place to pick up a book and left lots of great comments and reviews.
In a come-from-behind victory, Patch readers named Market Fresh Books their favorite bookstore in Evanston. We asked people to vote, leave comments and write reviews in our business directory, and Market Fresh Books was the clear winner with 61 percent of the vote. In a last-minute surge, Chicago Rare Book Center beat out Squeezebox Books for second place, getting 12 and 11 percent of the vote respectively. All three stores got lots of praise from fans. Reader Liz Stitely left this 5-star review for Market Fresh: "Great location - I love to buy books there AND sell them. This is a gem of a bookstore." We've tallied the votes in our inaugural Best of Patch Readers' Choice Award.
The Whole Foods at 1111 Chicago Ave. has been voted as Evanston's best grocery store in our first Best of Patch Readers' Choice poll. The store got 40 percent of the vote, with the Whole Foods at 1640 Chicago coming in second with 22 percent of the vote. We'll be running the polls every Monday through Friday so that you can help advise your neighbors on the best places to check out in town — and hopefully learn something new yourself. The much hailed arrival of Trader Joe's in Evanston is still a year away. In the meantime, we want to know what your favorite grocery store is in town.
