Evanston’s 'Painted House' Blends Art, Animosity
Unusual home on Emerson is artistic to some, 'an insult' to others.
A blight. A sore spot. Cool, unusual and creative. Depending on whom you talk to, there are many opinions about Evanston's "painted house," a dwelling with an exterior covered entirely in colorful imagery. Owned by developer Michael Lee, the tiny 624-square-foot house makes a big statement along the 1400 block of Emerson Street. Graffiti-style block letters and bright comic book-style drawings adorn its outside walls, making it a one-of-a-kind unofficial landmark in an otherwise conventional residential neighborhood. The project began in 2007 when Lee commissioned four artists, including his then-teenage son, to paint the structure after a routine inspection determined that parts of the exterior needed to be refinished. That house is awesome, I've been inside.. interesting layout, considering you enter into a bedroom. The people that I knew there were very cool, down to earth dudes! I fully support his art.   more ›
