New Daycare, Boutiques, Gallery Open in Evanston

A custom wedding dress designer and a restaurant specializing in grilled cheese opened in downtown Evanston, while a gallery moves in on Howard Street.

Bright Horizons Moves in Downtown Providing childcare and early education, Bright Horizons has locations around the country. Construction wrapped up this summer at a new center in Evanston, located right downtown at 1629 Orrington Ave. A ribbon cutting is set for Sept. 17. Peer2Peer Tutors Hires Local Kids A new tutoring center held its grand opening this Saturday. Working with the Youth Job Center, Peer2Peer Tutors has hired more than a dozen students from Evanston Township High School, Roycemore and Northwestern. Programs will include one on one tutoring, SAT classes and college essay assistance. Tutors come to students' homes. Bright Horizons Coming to Former Borders Site

The empty building on Orrington Ave. once held a Walgreens and Borders bookstore.

The long vacant property on Orrington Avenue will soon be bustling with new life. A Bright Horizons children's center has been approved by the Evanston city council to fill a space once owned by Walgreens and Borders. The item was approved by the city council on Monday. A special use zoning permit was required in order to put a daycare center in the space. "For the location at 1629 Orrington, Bright Horizons has partnered with Evanston Hospital and Northwestern University to provide childcare services currently not being provided for at both institutions," the city said of the new business, in a city council informational packet. Why is it that every time something good happens in Evanston do people always want to argue and try to stop it? This reminds me of the Office Depot sign on Greenbay Road.
